Sinners is one of the biggest hits of 2025, and director Ryan Coogler has just given some information on the film’s chances of getting a sequel. Sinners was a box office smash hit and the most successful non-IP film in years, meaning that getting a sequel seems like a no-brainer.
However, Ryan Coogler seems less excited about a sequel than many Sinners fans. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler was asked about whether or not Sinners would get a sequel. According to Coogler, “It’s tough to say now,” with the director not confirming or denying the chances of another Sinners film.
Coogler clarified this comment by adding that the original Sinners “was always intended to be a full meal of a movie.” While Coogler doesn’t “want to close the door on anything,” the Creed and Black Panther director wanted Sinners to be a “break from franchise filmmaking.” According to Coogler, Sinners is “complete.” Here are the director’s full comments:
“It’s tough to say now. I mean, it was always intended to be a full meal of a movie. You never want to close the door on anything, but it was actually a break from franchise filmmaking for me. So I wanted to make something that was complete and let audiences take it.”
What Ryan Cooglers Comments Mean For Sinners 2
The Sequel Probably Won’t Happen
Based on what Ryan Coogler said to The Hollywood Reporter, Sinners 2 seems incredibly unlikely. Although Coogler won’t completely rule out the idea, his comments imply that he isn’t interested in exploring this universe further. Instead, Coogler seems to be more interested in focusing on original movie rather than turning Sinners into a franchise.
It also seems unlikely that anyone besides Ryan Coogler would step in to take over the Sinners franchise. Sinners is increidbly personal to Coogler, with him making an unprecedented deal with Warner Bros. Pictures for the Sinners rights to revert to him after 25 years (via Business Insider). So, while Warner Bros. could do Sinners 2 without Coogler, this would probably get backlash.
Our Take On Sinners 2’s Chances
Keeping Sinners Stand-Alone Is Best
Thanks to the mᴀssive box office success of Sinners, Warner Bros. is undoubtedly eager to turn it into a franchise. Studios are constantly looking for new IP to turn into franchises, and Warner Bros. probably isn’t happy with Coogler’s comments about Sinners sequel chances.
However, keeping Sinners as a stand-alone movie is probably best. Sinners‘ vampires are used for a specific thematic purpose, and it would be hard to find this balance again in a sequel. There isn’t a clear story for a sequel with the original cast either, meaning that a potential Sinners follow-up would probably have to introduce new characters.
