Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Season 2 Teased by Showrunner (Along With Possible Movie)

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew showrunner Jon Watts has dropped an exciting season 2 tease, potentially even hinting at a spinoff movie. It’s been over six months since Star Wars: Skeleton Crew season 1 introduced viewers to the planet At Attin, with a group of young adventurers traveling the galaxy.

Speaking with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub at the Mediterrane Film Festival, showrunner Jon Watts dropped what certainly seems to be a hint about Star Wars: Skeleton Crew season 2.

“I love Star Wars, and I would love to make more Star Wars. I can’t say anything more. We always get in trouble when we do these interviews. I always say something, and I get in trouble. Like, I probably shouldn’t have said that. […] You’re going to get me in trouble.”

Asked about the future of Star Wars – which always seems so very up in the air – he stressed that he felt confident, not least because the people he worked with on Skeleton Crew are now working on their own movies.

“The two people that I worked with, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, as my main producers on Skeleton Crew, both made Star Wars movies. Well, Dave hasn’t made his yet. Favreau made his, so I know that’s for sure. So, it was like, “If we have something we want to make, we’re gonna make it. I don’t know about the rest of the development process and the people who come in, and how large the Star Wars universe is, but at least in our little umbrella of Star Wars, our corner of the Star Wars sandbox, we were able to do things. Even if I worked on a Star Wars thing and it never happened, it’s really fun to just use your imagination and make up fun things that could happen in Star Wars.”

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Season 2 Is Feeling A Lot More Possible Right Now

But There Are Still Major Obstacles

Skeleton Crew was a delightful TV show, not least because it was that rare thing in Star Wars; a story that was almost universally loved. Jon Watts’ adventure released at a time when the fandom was deeply divided after the controversies of The Acolyte, and it actually managed to introduce a degree of positivity into the franchise again.

At the same time, though, Skeleton Crew season 2 faces mᴀssive challenges. The core issue is that the young cast are aging, meaning a show – or, indeed, a movie – would need to begin production pretty quickly if it’s not to lose the coming-of-age aesthetic that made season 1 so great.

One of the stars, Ryan Keira Armstrong, has recently been hired as star of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot too – meaning her time will be at a premium.

This does not, however, mean that Skeleton Crew season 2 (or a movie spinoff) is an impossibility. In fact, just today we noted that one major element of the new Star Wars galaxy map seemed to be perfect setup; the planet At Attin, the kids’ homeworld, has been placed suspiciously near Grand Admiral Thrawn’s new base.

Our Take On Skeleton Crew’s Future

Lucasfilm Need To Make This A Priority

Jude Law’s Jod Na Nawood is probably the easiest character for Star Wars to bring back – and the timing of Jon Watts’ comment is interesting, because there have been recent reports he’s set to return to the galaxy.

As brilliant as Law may be, though, he wasn’t the main hook; the show shone because of the sheer quality of Law’s interactions with the rest of the cast. We can only hope that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew season 2 – or better – is in the works, and that it will be an absolute priority for Lucasfilm. This was a rare Star Wars TV show, more successful with Generation Z than other demographics, and it really does show the future of the franchise.
