New Blumhouse Horror Movie Debuts With Underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes Score Compared To Original $181M Hit

A new Blumhouse horror movie has debuted with an underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes score compared to the original hit. Founded by Jason Blum in 2000, Blumhouse movies have encompᴀssed a wide range of genres over the past 25 years, though the studio is best known for its horror movies, including popular franchises such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge.

Despite its history of hits, Blumhouse’s recent track record has been mixed. While movies like The Black Phone and M3GAN were commercial and commercial hits, more recent тιтles like Night Swim, Imaginary, and AfrAId all underperformed at the box office and scored 25% or lower on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, their Speak No Evil remake ended 2024 on a high note, earning solid 83% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. This year has been more mixed, with The Woman in the Yard receiving a lackluster 39% score, followed by Drop‘s strong 84% score. Now, Blumhouse has a new horror movie coming out, and it’s a sequel to a 2022 hit.

M3GAN 2.0 Debuts With An Underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes Score

The Original Movie Has A Strong 93% Score

M3GAN 2.0 has debuted with an underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes score compared to the original movie. A follow-up to 2022’s M3GAN, the sequel centers on the reconstruction of the тιтular model 3 generative android to take on a humanoid military robot, created using her own technology, that is leading an AI uprising.

Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, with a script he co-wrote with Akela Cooper, M3GAN 2.0‘s cast includes the return of Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, and Brian Jordan Alvarez. New cast members include Ivanna Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp, and Jemaine Clement.

Now, a few days ahead of its release, M3GAN 2.0 has debuted with a 61% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which, while not bad, is underwhelming compared to the original movie’s 93%. The sequel has 57 reviews at the time of writing, so its score should fluctuate as more are published.

What M3GAN 2.0’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Movie

What Are The Reviews Saying?

M3GAN 2.0‘s Rotten Tomatoes score means that its reviews are mixed. For instance, in ScreenRant‘s M3GAN 2.0 review, Mary Kᴀssel writes, “[The] sequel still made me laugh, but it no longer belongs to the horror genre… The more polished and grown-up world of the sequel doesn’t fit as easily into the silly sense of humor that made M3GAN so popular.”

While many find M3GAN 2.0 fun and bold, others feel it has lost what made the original so compelling.

Otherwise, the reviews are sharply divided. While some critics are praising the sequel’s campy humor, genre shift to action-comedy, and self-aware absurdity, likening it to Terminator 2 and Evil ᴅᴇᴀᴅ 2, others are calling it a convoluted mess, criticizing its tonal inconsistency and lack of horror. While many find M3GAN 2.0 fun and bold, others feel it has lost what made the original so compelling.

M3GAN 2.0 releases in theaters on June 27.
