From the World of John Wick: Ballerina hits a major box office milestone, enough to land on the studio’s highest-grossing charts. The new spinoff centers on Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), who seeks revenge against a group that killed her father. Despite its anticipation, the John Wick movie debuted with just $24 million during its opening weekend.
According to The Numbers, Ballerina has just crossed $105 million at the global box office after being in theaters for roughly three weeks. The latest milestone consists of $52.3 million domestically and $53 million internationally.
This is enough for the spinoff to land in Lionsgate’s top 50 highest-grossing charts, ranking at no. 48. It was able to surpᴀss movies like My Bloody Valentine, Escape Plan, and two Saw installments.
Why Is Ballerina Not A Box Office Success Despite The Global Milestone?
Ballerina Just Recently Surpᴀssed Its Budget Amount
While Ballerina was able to climb Lionsgate’s highest-grossing charts, that doesn’t mean that the John Wick spinoff is a box office hit. Unfortunately, the latest movie installment has been performing underwhelmingly at the box office, with its debut weekend even going below expectations. Since then, the spinoff has been trying to make ground, having hit the $100 million milestone in its third weekend.

However, even the latest milestone isn’t close to the break-even point. Ballerina reportedly had a $90 million budget, which means that the break-even point is roughly around $200 million. Unfortunately, there is very little box office momentum left for the spinoff since it’s already heading into its fourth weekend in theaters, where movies like F1 the Movie and M3GAN 2.0 are expected to debut.
There are a few reasons Ballerina has been dealing with this box-office disappointment, but the main contributor could stem from its release delay. It was initially supposed to release in the summer of 2024, with a trailer even debuting earlier in the year, but reshoots contributed to the movie’s release delay. That likely waned interest over time, alongside mixed reception to the Peacock series, The Continental.
With this box office update, Ballerina is currently the fourth-highest-grossing movie in the franchise, only ahead of the original 2014 movie. At this rate, it’s unlikely to surpᴀss the 2017 installment in the franchise’s chart, considering it made over $171 million. The current record holder is Chapter 4, which made over $447 million.
Our Take On The Ballerina Box Office Milestone
It’s Disappointing, But There’s Still Hope
Although director Len Wiseman has spoken about a sequel, the chances of a Ballerina 2 look slim due to its box office performance. It also raises concerns about the franchise’s prospects since several spinoffs are in the works, including Donnie Yen’s Caine spinoff.
On the other hand, this could be a hiccup for the franchise, especially since there is development of John Wick 5. While the box office isn’t the greatest, the reception has been a different story, as audiences seem to enjoy the spinoff. It even has the franchise’s best Popcornmeter of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Thus, there is a chance for Ballerina to become a success via streaming. While there is no official streaming date, the already positive reception will bode well for the movie as it will gain word-of-mouth and likely find some success once it becomes available at home. That may just be enough to keep the sequel and John Wick‘s prospects alive.
