Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Final Destination Bloodlines!
Stefani is the protagonist of Final Destination Bloodlines, and the film’s directors have finally shed some light on the origin of her unique premonition. Like every other Final Destination character, the sixth film starts with a character having a premonition. However, Stefani’s premonition is a dream about a premonition that her grandmother had decades earlier, as seen in Final Destination Bloodlines‘ opening scenes.
Speaking with Screen Rant’s Ash Crossan, Final Destination Bloodlines directors Adam Stein & Zach Lipovsky were asked why Stefani shared her grandmother’s premonition in the first place. Throughout the Final Destination franchise, this is unique to Stefani. According to Lipovsky, “It’s a really tricky thing.”
The directors decided to intentionally keep the source of the premonition vague, continuing a Final Destination trend. There has been a lot of speculation about whether the premonitions are random or if Death sent them, and the directors wanted to lean into this aspect, saying “I think there’s a ‘bring your own explanation’ to that that fits for all the audience.” Here are Lipovsky’s full comments:
It’s a really tricky thing. None of the movies ever really explain why people have premonitions or who’s creating the premonitions. There’s a lot of debate about that. Is there some other force other than death that’s creating the premonitions, or is death giving them the premonition just so that he can have some fun? There’s a lot of different theories on that. And why it’s slightly different in this case is also really interesting. I think we love that the audience can come to their own conclusions on that. We have some theories of our own, but in sort of the same way that Quentin Tarantino never explains what’s in the briefcase, I think there’s a ‘bring your own explanation’ to that that fits for all the audience
What The Directors’ Comments Mean For Final Destination Bloodlines’ Story
Why The Premonitions’ Origins Weren’t Explained
There still isn’t a definitive answer for the premonitions in Final Destination Bloodlines, and it is likely that there never will be. Like the directors imply, much of the horror of the Final Destination franchise comes from the unknowable nature of the supernatural enтιтies, and whether or not Death is behind the premonitions, revealing this would hurt the series’ mystery.
The fact that the directors intentionally kept the premonitions’ origins a secret is interesting, however, as Final Destination Bloodlines answered some other long-lasting franchise questions. For example, William Bludworth’s backstory was finally explained in Final Destination Bloodlines, deconfirming a lot of fan theories about the character.
It is a bit odd to have a character share a premonition with someone else without offering any explanation, however. This has never happened in the first five Final Destination films, and while revealing everything about the premonitions would have been too much, teasing this could have answered some big questions.
Our Take On Final Destination Bloodlines’ Lack Of A Premonition Explanation
Keeping Things Vague Is The Best Option
Although some fans were left scratching their heads after the new premonition was introduced in Final Destination Bloodlines, leaving it open-ended was the best option. Lipovsky is right when it comes to the premonitions being similar to the briefcase in Pulp Fiction, and revealing the origins of it would seriously hurt the narrative of the franchise.
Instead, keeping things vague is the best option. It is possible that a future Final Destination movie could find the proper way to explain the premonitions, but Final Destination Bloodlines wasn’t the place.
