“How Could You Not?” One Mandalorian Star, 53, Already Dropped A Hint About A New Star Wars Trilogy

In the wait for Star Wars‘ next major on-screen project, The Mandalorian and Grogu, news about the franchise is few and far between – and audiences are looking for anything new about the future of the galaxy. That has ranged from potential stars Lucasfilm has their eyes on to updates on projects that are currently in the works.

For The Mandalorian and Grogu, it’s meant a rumor that this movie will be turned into a trilogy if it succeeds, as shared by Hollywood scooper Daniel Richtman. This is, however, far from the first time this idea has been pᴀssed around.

In fact, this was brought up to a star of The Mandalorian last year, just after the initial announcement of The Mandalorian and Grogu movie. His response to the idea was extremely promising, and it makes complete sense of how Star Wars will likely respond to The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s inevitable success.

Brendan Wayne, who often steps into the Mando suit for actor Pedro Pascal in The Mandalorian franchise, shared his thoughts on a potential movie trilogy in February 2024. Speaking on the SithCast Podcast, Wayne said “how could you not?” in response to a pitch about making the movie into a trilogy.

Brendan Wayne: Yeah, I mean, there’s gotta be [a Mandalorian trilogy]. I don’t know, and I mean this, like, literally. I don’t know. But… how could you not? You have to do at least a trilogy.

It’s important to note, however, that Wayne emphasizes he truly doesn’t know what the plans are; he’s simply making a guess based on his own observations. This is also, according to him, based upon the reality that streaming costs quite a bit of money, and isn’t as “lucrative” as making movies.

The point still stands, though. If anyone has the best idea of what the future holds for The Mandalorian franchise, it’s one of the men who’s been inside Din Djarin’s armor ever since the character’s inception. All of this, however, hinges upon the movie’s success, which isn’t really a concern.

The Mandalorian Movie Will Have No Problem Being A Major Success

It’s Already One Of Star Wars’ Most Recognizable Brands

The common belief is that The Mandalorian and Grogu will only grow into a trilogy if the movie is a major success. If this is the truth, then this movie will have absolutely no problem getting greenlit for a trilogy, especially considering the substantial success of The Mandalorian TV show.

Ever since the mᴀssive success of The Mandalorian season 1 in 2019, this franchise has become absolutely inescapable. Din Djarin and Grogu, still referred to by many as “Baby Yoda,” are absolutely everywhere: merchandise, promotion, the Disney Parks, etc.

Star Wars is already planning for this success.

This isn’t just because Disney and Star Wars like The Mandalorian. This is because these characters, and their story, are already a mᴀssive success. They have, in many ways, helped to revitalize the franchise in the Disney era.

There’s no doubt, then, that their movie will be a mᴀssive success when it hits theaters in 2026. In fact, Star Wars is already planning for this success; Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts already have plans to transform their attraction, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, into a storyline based on The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The Mandalorian Movie Trilogy Seems Inevitable At This Point

But Only If The Story Allows It

This makes it clear that a trilogy based on The Mandalorian and Grogu isn’t just a possibility; it’s absolutely inevitable. This movie has a solid chance of being the next Star Wars film to hit $1 billion at the box office, and if that isn’t considered a success big enough to warrant a trilogy, then I don’t know what is.

Of course, like many of us, I also hope a potential The Mandalorian movie trilogy is based upon the story itself, and whatever is set up in The Mandalorian and Grogu. There are already plans for Dave Filoni to create a Mandalorian-era culmination movie, so there’s no telling how a standalone trilogy would fit into that.

Regardless, it does seem like Star Wars would be more than willing, and is likely already planning, to give The Mandalorian and Grogu a trilogy that carries its story onward. It’s only a matter of time until we find out, given the fact that the movie is now less than a year away from hitting theaters.

The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters May 22, 2026.
