M3GAN 2.0 is almost here and the producer of the franchise has just addressed whether the тιтular killer robot will appear in a potential Saw crossover. M3GAN was one of Blumhouse Productions’ biggest hits in recent years, thanks to it going viral in 2022, leading to the release of an even weirder sequel, M3GAN 2.0.
Speaking to Screen Rant‘s Liam Crowley at the M3GAN 2.0 red carpet premiere, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum was asked about the future of the M3GAN 2.0 franchise. Specifically, Blum was questioned about the possibility of a crossover between the Saw and M3GAN franchises, thanks to Blumhouse getting the rights to Saw after buying the franchise. In response, Jason Blum said
“Never say never. It hasn’t occurred to me personally, but it’s a great idea.“
So, this means that no crossover of this sort is currently in development. However, Blum is open to the idea, meaning that the M3GAN franchise could enter the world of crossovers if M3GAN 2.0 proves to be as big as the original film.
What Jason Blum’s Comments Mean For M3GAN’s Future
A Saw Crossover & More Spinoffs Could Be In Its Future
M3GAN is a horror franchise, but the films are also comedies, giving them the perfect tone for crossover movies. While crossovers featuring serious franchises often seem a bit too goofy, horror crossovers like Freddy vs. Jason are able to find the right tone, even if they aren’t the best films ever.
M3GAN could easily be a key player in the versus genre of crossover movies. Pitting her against Jigsaw, Chucky, or another doll-based horror villain could be a lot of fun. M3GAN’s sarcastic atтιтude makes her a perfect candidate for this type of movie if Blumhouse can find the right opponent.
Even outside of crossover movies, the M3GAN franchise is ripe for spinoffs. M3GAN 2.0 is clearly expanding the world of the franchise, and Blumhouse has plans for another killer android movie with SOULM8TE, though it remains to be seen if M3GAN will appear in it.
Beyond M3GAN, there’s also the potential for Saw under Blumhouse to consider here. The franchise is now back with its original creator in James Wan, and hopes are high that they can do something fresh that revitalizes the series. Whether that’s actually a crossover, or something else entirely, is another matter.
Our Take On M3GAN & Saw’s Crossover Potential
Do We Want To See Crossovers?
M3GAN crossovers with things like Saw could be fun, but Blumhouse does need to avoid overexposure to the franchise. Franchises like Saw and The Conjuring have attempted to expand into the world of spinoffs, and the decreasing quality and sheer amount of these films have hurt both brands immensely.
The M3GAN character is the main appeal of M3GAN, so any expansion without her is a risk, and hopefully that’s something SOULM8TE can get right. However, I would be open to a crossover featuring the тιтular robot if the right story came along, based on how M3GAN 2.0 turns out to be.
