Channing Tatum Is A Criminal Living In Toys “R” Us In The First Trailer For Upcoming True Story Crime Comedy Roofman

The first trailer for Paramount’s upcoming Roofman movie has been released, giving a first look at the new Channing Tatum crime comedy film. Roofman comes from Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cianfrance and stars Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn, Peter Dinklage, and more.

The Roofman trailer introduces the world to Channing Tatum’s Jeffrey Manchester, based on the real-life criminal who evaded authorities by living within the walls of a Toys “R” Us store. The trailer explains the origins of the story, showing how Manchester escapes prison, why he hides out in the toy store, and how his life within the walls develops as he waits until the cops are off his trail.

However, the trailer also reveals that things immediately become complicated for Manchester. Manchester seems to enter a romantic relationship with Kirsten Dunst’s Leigh Wainscott, although his discovery of her law enforcement connections puts him in jeopardy.

What The First Trailer Means For Roofman

The Channing Tatum Movie Looks Excellent

While the premise Roofman sounds wild, the first trailer looks surprisingly good, meaning that it may draw many audience members in. The first Roofman trailer gives a lot of focus to the film’s star-studdedn cast, with the talent that makes up the film’s cast of characters being one of the biggest appeals of the film.

However, the Roofman trailer also heavily leans into the comedy aspect, explaining Channing Tatum’s casting. While a premise as wild as this would be impossible to do as a serious drama, the real-life origins of the story left the tone of the film a bit vague. Roofman‘s first trailer implies that the film will either be a drama or a comedy-drama, setting expectations for a humorous movie experience.

Fans of Derek Cianfrance will see some of the filmmaker’s directorial touches throughout the film, with the cinematography, acting, and blocking using the more grounded style that he has become known for. This isn’t the first crime story that Cianfrance has directed, and Roofman is shaping up to be another great entry in the genre.

Our Take On Roofman’s First Trailer

It Shows A Bit Too Much

The first Roofman trailer does reveal a bit too much about the film for my taste, with it showing a big reveal about Kirsten Dunst’s character as well as how Jeffrey Manchester is discovered by the Toys “R” Us employees. The premise alone is enough to market the movie, and the trailer’s presentation of the story essentially lays out the entire film.

It is possible that Roofman could be hiding more, but from what it seems, the trailer gives too much away. However, the trailer still portrays Roofman as a quality film, and many will be wanting to see it when Roofman releases on October 10, 2025.
