Sigourney Weaver’s $79M Mystery Thriller Surges On Netflix’s Global Charts 30 Years Later

Sigourney Weaver’s $79 million mystery thriller movie is a streaming hit 30 years after release, landing on Netflix’s global chart. The Avatar star’s filmography includes examples of nearly every genre. That’s to be expected given that Weaver received her first on-screen credit way back in 1977, and has worked consistently ever since.

Sci-fi is arguably her signature genre, after playing Ripley in multiple Alien movies, along with being in Avatar, but Weaver has found time for a handful of Earth-bound thrillers along the way. Eyewitness and Half Moon Street were two of her first, and 1994’s Death and the Maiden was one of her best.

The 2000s saw Weaver signing up for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village, while in the 2010s she starred in the action-thriller The Cold Light of Day opposite Henry Cavill, along with The ᴀssignment. In 2022, she worked with legendary director Paul Schrader on the crime movie Master Gardener.

Sigourney Weaver’s Mystery-Thriller Copycat Is A Global Hit On Netflix

It’s In The Streamer’s Top Ten

Serial killer movies were all the rage in the 1990s, and Weaver got on the bandwagon with 1995’s Copycat, which is having a moment 30 years later, having surged into Netflix’s top 10. The thriller stars Weaver as an agoraphobic psychologist who comes out of hiding to help a police detective (Holly Hunter) track down a vicious murderer.

Copycat grossed $79 million on a budget of $27 million, and sits at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Copycat has itself come out of hiding 30 years after its theatrical release, climbing all the way to number 7 on Netflix’s global chart for the week ending June 22, 2025. Tudum reports the movie has gotten 6 million views in that span, adding up to 12.4 million viewing hours.

Our Take On Copycat Being A Global Streaming Hit

It’s Huge In Scandinavia And The UK

Sigourney Weaver points a gun toward the camera in Copycat

Weaver’s 30-year-old serial killer movie is getting Netflix views in America, landing at number 10. But it’s even more popular in Europe, hitting number 3 in Denmark, number 5 in Finland and Ireland, number 6 in the UK, number 8 in Sweden and number 9 in Norway.

The movie isn’t making as big a splash in places like India, the Middle East and South America, though it is number 10 in Japan. Overall, the film’s streaming surge is largely a European and North American phenomenon.

A twisty 1990s thriller like Copycat might be an unlikely candidate to hit big in certain regions, where tastes run more toward action movies. Copycat being a hit in places like Sweden and Denmark should be no surprise, though. It’s a serial killer murder-mystery, and those countries can’t seem to get enough of the genre.

Copycat being a streaming hit 30 years after its initial release is indeed a reflection of the thriller genre’s continued worldwide popularity. True crime may be all the rage in 2025, but fictional crime also remains fascinating to viewers in many cultures.
