Chris Evans & Pedro Pascal’s Critically-Acclaimed A24 Movie Hits Major Box Office Milestone In Just Two Weeks

Materialists, the new A24 romantic drama starring Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, hits a major box office milestone in two weeks. Released on June 13, the romantic comedy sees a struggling actor, John (Evans), and a millionaire, Harry (Pascal), both up for the attention of the same woman. Dakota Johnson stars as Lucy, a matchmaker, torn between her ex and a dream match. The Celine Song-directed movie opened to an estimated $12 million during its opening weekend at the domestic box office, which is the third largest for an A24 movie.

According to The Numbers, Materialists has grossed over $30 million at the worldwide box office, with $23 million coming from domestic earnings and $7 million from international ticket sales. Crossing the major milestone also ranks the new romantic comedy as the 23rd A24 highest-grossing movie of all time at the worldwide box office and 16th at the domestic box office.

What This Means For Materialists

Materialists Is A Box Office Success & Critical Favorite

Materialists has a reported production budget of $20 million. While there’s no information on the marketing cost, the movie is likely close to turning a profit, if not already. So far, the highest-grossing A24 movie of all time is Everything Everywhere All at Once, having amᴀssed over $144 million. While Materialists is far from making it to the top of the list, it’s less than a million from surpᴀssing Priscilla‘s worldwide box office at no.22. With the movie only in theaters for less than two weeks, it’ll continue to climb the chart and cross more box office milestones.

In addition to the box office success, the Evans and Pascal romantic drama was also critically well-received. ScreenRant‘s review for Materialists highlighted its unique take on a classic romantic trope, giving the movie a 9/10 rating. Similarly, other critics have voiced high praise for the movie. Materialists has garnered an 81% Tomatometer score from 198 reviews, although the Popcornmeter score is less favorable at 67%.

Our Take On Materialists’ Box Office

Materialists Will Cross More Box Office Milestones

As many reviews have noted, what separates Song’s latest movie from other films in the romance genre is the realistic depiction of Lucy and John’s love story. Pedro Pascal’s character also has an unexpected reveal that makes him more relatable, as he feels he has to alter his physical appearance to be more desirable in the dating world.

$30 million at the box office is only the beginning of the critically acclaimed A24 romantic drama’s success. Fans can expect to see that number grow in the coming weeks. It’s very possible that Materialists might double or even triple how much it has made so far and more at the end of its theatrical run, given its popularity.
