Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Star Explains How The Sequel Is Tackling The Oldest Monsterverse Problem

Godzilla X Kong: Supernova star Delroy Lindo provides some perspective on how the next entry in Legendary’s Monsterverse could break new ground with its human cast. While very little is known about the plot of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, the non-тιтan cast list has been steadily growing for months now, and it’s loaded with renowned stars like Lindo.

In an interview segment with KTVU in Oakland, Lindo got into his experience on the set of the upcoming third team-up between Godzilla and Kong. He specifically noted his appreciation for the producers from Legendary and Warner Bros. for their vision for the movie:

I appreciated the fact that these producers are equally cognizant of the fact that the human element in these narratives needs to be as strong as possible. And from that standpoint, they worked with me to flesh out the character they wanted me to play…we worked to flesh out the character and make the character as humanly relatable as possible, because they very smartly understand that in order to make these big CGI-inspired films work, the human element also has to be compelling for audiences.

No information is yet available about Delroy Lindo’s character, but he will be one of the many new human characters to the franchise. As of this writing, only Dan Stevens’ тιтan veterinarian Trapper has been confirmed to return from Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, making any Supernova plot theories difficult to confirm.

What Delroy Lindo’s Comments Mean For Godzilla X Kong: Supernova

The Monsterverse Isn’t Going To Waste Supernova’s Outstanding Cast

Lindo’s comments make it sound like the producers behind the Monsterverse may be looking to address one of the oldest complaints from the monster-heavy interconnected cinematic universe. Through the first five movies, the human cast has largely (although not entirely) turned over each movie, making it difficult to connect or develop any human stories without taking away from the monster-mashing action.

That strategy has yielded plenty of top-notch тιтan battles and some remarkable imagery, which audiences have fully embraced. However, Lindo’s comments make it seem like a transition is at least possible for Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, with the narrative’s center shifting a bit more towards its human cast.

That would make a lot of sense given how many heavy-hitters have been added to the production so far. With production now underway, Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us), Sam Neill (Jurᴀssic Park), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Jack O’Connell (Sinners), and Alycia Debnam-Carey (Fear the Walking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ) are slated to join the aforementioned Dan Stevens and Delroy Lindo.

With that many heavy hitters in the cast, the movie will almost have to revolve around the human side of things. Whether it’s as part of the тιтan-tracking organization Monarch or a new compeтιтor in the rumored international тιтan-battling G-Force, Lindo’s comments make it seem like the human stars will each be afforded a legitimate chance to shine.

Our Take On A Human Focus For Godzilla X Kong: Supernova

It’s The Next Big Step For The Monsterverse

Godzilla and Kong charging

The Monsterverse has shifted tone significantly from its original movie, 2014’s Godzilla. While that tied Godzilla vs. Kong for the highest Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score with a 76%, it boasts the franchise’s lowest Popcornmeter (audience) score with a 66%. However, that first movie had some of the highest screen time for its human cast, specifically Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Lt. Brody Ford.

On the other side of the coin, both Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire have been designated as “Rotten” by critics while boasting audience scores in the 80s. So far, in the Monsterverse, the more screen time the monsters get, the more audiences seem to approve.

Therefore, the next natural step is for the two sides to meet, with a well-struck balance between monster action and human character development. A darker-leaning story could help make that feat more possible, as dire consequences for the тιтans could naturally push the narrative towards more human involvement, and subsequently better character development.

Toho’s Academy Award-winning juggernaut Godzilla Minus One proved that it’s perfectly possible to fuse great monster action with a compelling human story. Delroy Lindo’s comments indicate that Godzilla X Kong: Supernova could be attempting to capture the same magic, which could result in one of the strongest overall entries in the Monsterverse yet.
