Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 actor Danny Huston offers an ambiguous update on Kevin Costner’s upcoming sequel. Filmed back-to-back with Chapter 1, the second installment in Kevin Costner’s epic western movie series was initially scheduled for release on August 16, 2024, but was pulled from the release calendar. Despite being indefinitely delayed, the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and was screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February. A release date is not yet attached to the movie.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for Consecration‘s digital release, Huston, who plays Col. Albert Houghton in Horizon, talks about Chapter 2‘s delay. The star admits that he “can’t wait” for the sequel to be released, calling Costner’s pᴀssion project “an epic dream of a film.” While he believes that the film will be released eventually, he doesn’t have an exact timeframe. Check out his comments below:
Yes, I am absolutely bated breath anticipating. I can’t wait to see the second chapter. It’s such a big document, an epic dream of a film. It’s like a steam engine that’s coming at us, and it won’t stop. There’s no stopping it. But it’s working at its own pace.
What This Means For Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2
Horizon Chapter 2 Is Still On The Shelf
New Line Cinema pulled Chapter 2 from its initial release date after Chapter 1‘s disappointing box office performance, having only earned $38 million against a $100 million production budget for two films. Since then, there hasn’t been much update on the sequel’s theatrical release. In a previous interview with ScreenRant in May, Horizon star Isabelle Fuhrman (Diamond), shared a similar comment, revealing that she hasn’t heard much about Chapter 2‘s release date or the filming for the future installments.
It seems that despite Costner’s efforts to push for a 2025 release window, there’s currently no word on the project past Chapter 1. On the other hand, Huston’s high praise echoes Fuhrman’s comment about the sequel and some of the critical reviews about the sequel, though overall reception continues to be mixed. Horizon: Chapter 2 currently has a 54% Rotten Tomatoes score, which is only 3% better than Chapter 1‘s divisive reception.
Our Take On Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2’s Delay
A Few Factors Are Working Against Chapter 2’s Release
Despite being Kevin Costner’s pᴀssion project, Horizon has attracted some negative press since the first movie’s release. Following its box-office disappointment, the movie series has also gotten itself wrapped up in legal entanglement. Costner and producers were sued by a stunt double over an unscripted Sєxual ᴀssault scene, while more recently, United Costume Corporation sued Costner’s company for unpaid costume fees, creating even more uncertainty about Chapter 2‘s fate.
It makes sense why the film might be taking some time to be released, if it ever will, but it sounds like Huston remains optimistic, having seen the sequel. While Horizon isn’t widely loved by the critics, it does have a fresh audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which suggests that Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, following the first movie’s storyline and format, could also do very well among viewers. However, it seems that fans will have to wait a little to hear more about the sequel.
