Rachel Zegler Reportedly In Talks To Portray Iconic Sound Of Music Role

Rachel Zegler is reportedly in talks to play the main role in The Sound of Music. Zegler is known as a skilled actor on both the stage and screen. On the film side of things, she got her start playing the role of Maria in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story. This year, she returned to the musical genre when she played the тιтular princess in Disney’s live-action Snow White. Though the film itself was subject to some harsh critique, Zegler’s role was consistently praised. On stage, she made her Broadway debut in 2024 in a production of Romeo & Juliet.

As per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Zegler is now reportedly in talks to play the protagonist in The Sound of Music. According to the source, the Snow White actor is in conversation to play the role of Maria von Trapp, a part originated by Julie Andrews, in a stage production of the series at Lincoln Center in New York City. It was noted by the source, however, that Zegler’s Sound of Music role is not yet confirmed.

What This Means For Rachel Zegler

She Is Currently In Another Major Stage Production

This news comes right as Zegler is currently starring in another major stage production. She is performing in a West End production of Evita at the London Palladium. There, she plays Eva Peron, the infamous former First Lady of Argentina on whom the musical is based. Zegler’s performance has earned a great deal of praise, and the revival has done incredibly well in terms of ticket sales. For this reason, it makes sense why Zegler might be offered more stage roles, especially as she is in talks to continue her Evita work on Broadway in 2027.

Playing Maria von Trapp would mark yet another time when Zegler takes on an iconic role. Andrews’ version of the character is universally well-reviewed and is still touted today as one of the greatest musical performances of all time. Audiences have a similar love for Maria of West Side Story, as well as Snow White. Eva Peron is also a classic role in the stage musical realm. As such, taking on Maria von Trapp would further highlight how well Zegler is able to take on and reimagine iconic roles.

Our Take On Zegler’s Potential Sound Of Music Role

She Is The Perfect Choice For The Part

Snow White acts as fantastic proof that Zegler would be perfect for The Sound of Music. The Disney live-action remake both demanded a powerful vocal performance from the star and a sense of warmth in her acting. If transferred over to the Lincoln Center stage, the von Trapp children could take the place of the dwarfs as yet another fantastic testament to Zegler’s talent.
