Star Wars has been failing a classic Clone Wars character for a while now, and Ahsoka season 2 is only making this worse. Star Wars: The Clone Wars‘ timeline explored the years between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, meaning some classic Star Wars characters were the focus. Some of Star Wars’ most powerful Jedi, like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, and Yoda, received a lot of depth from the show, while others who are now fan-favorites received their debuts.
Ahsoka Tano is one such character, with Ahsoka season 2’s story only set to continue the тιтular hero’s journey in the Star Wars saga. Through Ahsoka, many other characters originally introduced in animation, be it The Clone Wars or Star Wars Rebels, are being further explored in live-action. This is only a benefit for Star Wars’ New Republic timeline, but it makes the disrespect of a classic character of this ilk much worse than it already has been. In 2026, it seems as though Ahsoka season 2 will only rub salt in that wound.
Star Wars Has Been Failing Clone Commander Rex In Live-Action
Rex Is Being Underutilized
The character who is being failed by live-action Star Wars projects is Rex. Despite appearing in Star Wars: The Bad Batch recently, Rex is one of the only major characters from The Clone Wars and Rebels who has yet to be included properly in live-action. Ahsoka season 1, episode 5 saw the character appear in a brief flashback to the time of the Clone Wars, yet it was only a few seconds long and featured Rex in full clone armor, meaning his face was not seen.
To make matters worse, the rest of Ahsoka season 1 was essentially Star Wars Rebels season 5, only this time in live-action. The appearance of characters like Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, Jacen Syndulla, Ezra Bridger, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and others proved as much. Rex, however, was one of the only vital members of Rebels‘ story, who was still alive at the time of Ahsoka, not to have a role. This, combined with the fact that Ahsoka and Rex have a strong friendship and a shared, traumatic past, makes it clear that Star Wars has failed the iconic clone commander.
Ahsoka Season 2 Will Reunite All Remaining Members Of The Rebels Crew… Except For Rex
Rex Is Still Being Shunned
After this disrespect of Rex in live-action, the updates about Ahsoka season 2 have only made it worse. The returning characters of Ahsoka season 2 were confirmed by showrunner Dave Filoni at Star Wars Celebration 2025, with the aforementioned characters from Rebels all coming back for another fight against Grand Admiral Thrawn. Although Garazeb “Zeb” Orelios, another major character from Rebels, did not appear in Ahsoka season 1, he had a cameo in The Mandalorian season 3.
Zeb has also been confirmed to appear in 2026’s The Mandalorian and Grogu.
In Ahsoka season 2, Zeb will appear once more and reunite with his old family from Rebels. This makes the slight against Rex even worse than it already was. As of 2026, every major character that played a role in Star Wars Rebels will appear in Ahsoka season 2, yet not a word has been spoken about Rex’s involvement. As such a fan-favorite character, this makes absolutely no sense.
Star Wars’ Failing Of Rex Goes Even Deeper Knowing Who Would Play Him
Rex’s Live-Action Actor Has Been Equally Scorned
Going beyond storytelling, Star Wars’ abandonment of Rex extends to his actor, Temuera Morrison. Since the prequel trilogy, Morrison has been responsible for bringing the clones to life in live-action projects, extending to his own show, The Book of Boba Fett. However, the reaction to that show saw Morrison somewhat sidelined, with the actor unsure about where his next Star Wars role will come from. Morrison has been nothing but vocal about his love for Star Wars and his never-ending wish to return in any capacity, something that makes the absence of Rex all the more difficult to bear.
If anyone deserves another chance in Star Wars, it is Morrison. In fact, in 2025, Morrison commented on his Star Wars future. He, once more, reiterated his uncertainty about his future, all while stating, “I’m trying to ring them up. Can I be [clone trooper Captain] Rex and take his helmet off, please?” Evidently, Morrison would love to continue having fun in Star Wars, especially as Rex, making Ahsoka season 2 a perfect opportunity for this. That said, the lack of updates surrounding Rex’s future means the disrespect of the character – and his actor – sadly continues.
