“It Has Been A Few Centuries”: Russell Crowe Has A Brilliant Response To Highlander Reboot Movie Casting

Russell Crowe is officially set to join the cast of the new Highlander movie and has a brilliant response. The Academy Award-winning actor, who earned the acknowledgment for his role in Gladiator (2000), is set to play the Immortal Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, who served as the mentor figure to Christopher Lambert’s Connor MacLeod in the original movie. Crowe is set to star alongside Henry Cavill, who will be playing MacLeod in the Highlander reboot of the 1986 epic.

In a post on his personal Twitter account, Crowe posted a link to Variety‘s casting announcement and confirmed it. Explaining that “it has been a few centuries,” the Oscar winner emphasized that he “shall be returning to the highlands with a sword” when the movie is officially released. Check out his post below:

In the hashtags at the end of his post, the star hinted at the involvement of the Fraser of Lovat clan in Wemyss, as well as the Macdonald of Clanranald clan. He also promised that “there can only be one,” which hints at the general singular mission of all the Immortals in the Highlander franchise.

What This Means For Crowe’s Highlander Casting

He Will Perfectly Fit Sean Connery’s Shoes

If this post is any indication, Crowe is already living up to his casting, which is not especially surprising. As his Oscar-winning performance in Gladiator indicated, he is an extraordinary actor who can bring gravitas to his roles with apparent ease. He thrives in historical epics, appearing in major roles in 3:10 to Yuma (2007), Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), American Gangster (2007), and the upcoming Nuremberg (2025). Crowe has even led horror movies, proving that he has the strong range that this role needs.

The mentor role in Highlander is especially important, given that it will be Crowe who introduces Cavill’s MacLeod to the reality of being an immortal. Ramírez also serves as a major aspect of his motivation, as MacLeod is forced to avenge his mentor after the Kurgan’s attack. The centuries-old Ramírez does not actually spend much time on screen, which means that he needs to maintain a strong presence to remain memorable to audiences. Crowe is the perfect actor to bring an intense performance to a limited role.

Our Take On Crowe’s Highlander Casting

This Is A Brilliant Role For Crowe

Crowe’s intensity proves that this casting is already fairly brilliant, and it should only increase when he actually arrives on set. After all, the story may be modified to give him more room to explore his character. While filming was originally set to begin in January 2025, it was partly delayed by other pre-existing productions, so the movie should be released in late 2026 or 2027. When the Highlander reboot is finally released, Crowe’s performance will undoubtedly be the intense and emotional portrayal that viewers have come to expect from him.

Crowe’s addition marks a reunion with Cavill since Man of Steel.
