Mission: Impossible 8 Box Office Hits Major Domestic Milestone & Closes In On OG 1996 Movie In Franchise’s Chart

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning just crossed another major domestic milestone at the box office. The eighth Mission: Impossible movie follows up on ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning‘s cliffhanger ending, as Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt continues to wage war against the AI Enтιтy. It was a costly production for Paramount Pictures, as Final Reckoning‘s budget was reportedly $400 million. It was released in late May domestically and has been struggling to reach profitability at the box office.

According to a report by ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Final Reckoning has crossed the $175 million threshold in its fifth weekend in theaters. Coming in at fifth place on the weekend, it is poised to earn $7.1 million across this three-day window, which represents a 33% drop from week 4. That is enough to reach $178.9 million throughout its domestic run, which means that it should surpᴀss the original movie’s $180.9 million domestic total within the next week.

What This Box Office Milestone Means For Final Reckoning

It’s Still Not Going To Profit

The latest milestone has already put Final Reckoning on track to climb domestic charts with apparent ease. It has already earned more than Mission: Impossible III‘s $134 million domestic total, as well as ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning‘s $173 million. It should even cross the first installment’s $181 million within the next two weeks. Rogue Nation could stay firmly out of reach with $195 million, and it is also unlikely that Final Reckoning will reach $200 million, as new compeтιтion enters theaters. Check out the chart below, which showcases all the Mission: Impossible domestic totals:

тιтle

Budget

Domestic Box Office

Adjusted for Inflation

Mission: Impossible (1996)

$80 million

$181 million

$377 million

Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

$120 million

$215 million

$409 million

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

$150 million

$134 million

$217 million

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

$145 million

$209 million

$305 million

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

$150 million

$195 million

$268 million

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

$178 million

$220 million

$285 million

Mission: Impossible – ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning Part One (2023)

$290 million

$173 million

$185 million

When adjusting for inflation, however, the $175 million total is not quite as impressive. It would not surpᴀss other Mission: Impossible movies, though it could eventually outstrip ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning, given that its run is not quite over. Its international total will be its biggest support, as high proceeds overseas have allowed it to pᴀss $500 million worldwide. Unfortunately, even that will not be enough to earn a profit against Final Reckoning‘s budget, after accounting for marketing costs and the cut that theaters demand from each ticket.

Our Take On Mission: Impossible 8’s New Milestone

This Is The Cost Of Increasing Budgets

With ever-rising budgets in Hollywood, every new blockbuster also has the risk of being a disappointment. Mission: Impossible 8 has had a strong run, but it could still fail due to that enormous budget. The $175 million milestone is something that should be celebrated, as should Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning‘s strong reviews. Instead, the movie continues to struggle through its fifth week, as it will need to depend on streaming to reach eventual profitability.
