The article contains major spoilers for 28 Years Later.28 Years Later star Jodie Comer addresses the major infected twist. During the movie’s events, as they search for Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), Spike (Alfie Williams) and his mother, Isla (Comer), come across a pregnant woman (played by Celi Crossland) infected with the Rage virus. They help the infected woman give birth to her daughter, also named Isla, who is surprisingly brought into the world uninfected. It’s one of the biggest 28 Years Later twists that changes the lore behind the infected.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Comer felt that the baby twist would probably mark a “huge shift or introduction of something going forward.” She argued that the zombie birthing an uninfected baby provides some glimmer of hope for the people in the world of 28 Years Later. Read her response below:
“Yeah. Well, I think, I mean, that moment to me, I think to all of us, feels so profound and I think is probably going to indicate a huge shift or introduction of something going forward. You know, that there’s this, this baby that is uninfected and provides this element of hope.”
Additionally, Comer addressed why Isla decided to help the infected with birthing in the first place. After a discussion with Boyle, the star believes that her character may have helped with multiple births, which made her recognize the infected’s screams. Due to her own illness likely fogging her sense of reality, she didn’t get the sense of danger being around the infected, and likely even pushed that judgment aside. Read her response below:
“So we’d imagine that she probably helped with a couple of births, and there was something about the kind of primal scream of that pregnant infected that only she recognized something in that, that kind of raw that she had to go towards. And that’s why her kind of and I think also because of her illness and, you know, her kind of fractured sense of reality, she doesn’t understand the, I guess, the dangers within that, but also is able to kind of push them aside in order to be there for another woman that she sees who’s in need of help.”
What Comer’s Comments Mean For 28 Years Later
Isla Teases The Uninfected Baby’s Huge Role After 28 Years Later
Based on Comer’s comments, it seems that baby Isla will have a greater role in the story following 28 Years Later, particularly in its upcoming sequels. Baby Isla may grow up to become a productive member of Holy Island’s community after Spike left her there at the end of 28 Years Later. However, the uninfected baby may help humanity develop a cure for the Rage virus.
Humanity previously tried to find a cure for the infected in 28 Weeks Later. However, it appears that 28 years after the outbreak, humanity has failed to do so, leaving the infected quarantined in the United Kingdom. While all those years may have caused some people to give up on finding a cure, the discovery of little Isla may inspire new hope for humanity in eradicating the Rage virus from the world.
Our Take On 28 Years Later’s Infected Twist
Isla And The Baby Inspire New Hope For Humanity In Several Ways
Comer claims that a more lucid Isla may not have helped the infected woman give birth, but her decision to do so presents a refreshing sense of empathy in such a dark franchise. Though the infected were once human beings, they have since been considered mindless beasts devoid of souls. However, when Isla found her, she just saw a person who needed help delivering a child.
Though the mother ended up attacking adult Isla, the duo shared a brief primal connection that allowed them to collaborate and bring new life into the world.
Though the mother ended up attacking adult Isla, the duo shared a brief primal connection that allowed them to collaborate and bring new life into the world. The uninfected baby, Isla, continues to blur the line that divides humans from the infected, whom Dr. Kelson argues they are still the same as the former. Though the infected have been cut off from the world by humanity, Isla’s existence may further encourage people to try to heal the infected.
While Isla failed to find a cure for her own illness, her delivery and protection of the uninfected baby may allow humanity to find a cure for another. It’s unknown how big of a role the baby will play in the sequels to 28 Years Later. Whatever it is, her existence will surely have huge ramifications in the story set up in Danny Boyle’s new film.
