Elio’s Sequel Chances & Potential Stories Teased By Pixar Movie Directors

Elio is finally here, and the directors of the new Pixar movie are already teasing the possibility of a sequel. Elio is the 2025 Pixar movie that tells the story of the тιтular young boy as he is abducted by aliens, with them believing that he is an ambᴀssador for Earth. Elio has already gotten great reviews, and the original Pixar movie may have more in store for the future according to the directors.

Speaking with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Elio directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi discussed how large the Elio universe is and how that can impact the future of the franchise. Shi explains that the first movie will “leave the door open” for a sequel, and that “There are so many more aliens and planets we could visit.” Sharafian agrees, touching on the ideas that they had for the original film that were cut for time. Here are the directors’ full comments:

Domee Shi: We leave the door open. Well, this is a spoiler for the end of the movie, but yeah, the universe is so vast, and the world of Elio is so rich. There are so many more aliens and planets we could visit.

Madeline Sharafian: There were so many aliens we had to trim for time, characters with featured moments that were so funny.

Domee Shi: They had whole backstories. They had families. I want to know about Glordon’s mom. The Blood Wars. There’s so much there. A whole story. So much more.

What Elio’s Sequel Tease Means For The Pixar Movie

What Are The Chances Of A Sequel Happening?

Pixar is always looking to make franchises and sequels out of originla properties, and they will most likely do the same with Elio if it is a success. The film is already a critical hit, which is a good sign for the film’s franchise chances. Pixar’s Elio is in theaters June 20, meaning that news about its box office performance will be heard soon.

Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter recently explained how the studio decides which Pixar movies get sequels and become franchises. Essentially, there are two criteria. First, the original movie has to be successful. Second, Pixar has to have ideas for a sequel story. Since Shi and Sharafian have already confirmed that they have ideas for an Elio sequel, it means that one could be in the works if the film succeeds commercially.

Our Take On Elio’s Sequel Chances

It Would Be A Good Addition To Pixar’s Collection Of Franchises

Pixar has relied on the same few franchises for too long, so it would be nice for Elio to join the ranks of series like Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Cars. While Pixar’s original films haven’t been guaranteed box office hits for a while now, Elio‘s critical success and word of mouth could help the film. So, fans of Elio who want to see a sequel need to keep their fingers crossed that the film will succeed financially.
