James Gunn Addresses DCU Batman Casting Rumors After Recent Robert Pattinson Comments

James Gunn has shared a new update on the search for the next Batman after recently commenting on the fans’ campaign to see Robert Pattinson join the new DC Universe. Pattinson will not be crossing over to the DCU’s slate of projects, which Gunn and The Batman Universe mastermind Matt Reeves have stated on multiple occasions. That means a new actor will be cast as Bruce Wayne in Batman’s announced The Brave and the Bold movie. However, fans will have to wait a little longer to know who will be playing DC’s Dark Knight.

On Threads, James Gunn confirmed that casting for the DCU’s Batman is not underway.

James Gunn says on Threads that casting for DCU Batman is not underway

With few concrete updates on the status of the upcoming DC movie, a lot of rumors have come up about The Brave and the Bold. The latest rumor pertaining to the Dark Knight’s new movie was that DC had already begun the casting process to find its new Batman. However, Gunn debunked it. After claiming casting was not going to start in the fall for the Teen тιтans movie, Gunn confirmed Batman’s casting has yet to start, saying, “Yep.”

What James Gunn’s DCU Batman Casting Comments Mean

DC’s Batman Projects Have Faced A Series Of Delays

The Batman 2 is now set to be released on October 1, 2027. The movie has suffered a series of delays, in part due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes and also due to how long it is taking director Matt Reeves to come up with the script for the film. Based on that, it makes sense that Gunn would say casting for the DCU version of Batman has yet to start. After all, the studio is currently busy trying to get the sequel to its successful The Batman going.

With The Batman delayed to 2027, the DCU’s debut film for the Dark Knight, The Brave and the Bold, could only be released in 2028 at the earliest. That is due to how DC would likely never release two live-action Batman movies in the same year, even if they are from different universes. As such, casting for the DCU Batman could still be a couple of years away. The best way to pinpoint when it will start is through The Brave and the Bold’s script, given Gunn said the casting for DCU characters only begins when the scripts are finished.

Our Take On James Gunn’s DCU Batman Casting Comments

The DCU’s Batman Is Still A Few Years Away

I’m not surprised by Gunn’s new DCU Batman casting comments. What would be shocking is if DC was already holding auditions for its new Batman. As it stands, we are still years away from seeing The Brave and the Bold, so it would not make sense to cast the hero this far in advance. That said, I’m hopeful that Gunn will find a way to bring in the DCU’s Batman earlier than in 2028, be it in a Superman sequel or another team-up, and we could then know who will play Bruce Wayne.
