“We Didn’t Think It Was Going To Be This Mᴀssive”: Star Of $361M Blockbuster Didn’t See Headline-Making Success Coming

Sinners star Li Jun Li reflects on the mᴀssive success of Ryan Coogler’s vampire horror movie. The story of Sinners, which is now available on digital, follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return home to their small town in Mississippi to open up a club. However, on the opening night, they are targeted by a group of vampires who want to grow their community. Ever since its release, reviews for Sinners have been incredible, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it a score of 9 out of 10. Additionally, the movie was also a huge box office success.

Months after the release of the film, Li talked about the commercial and critical success of Sinners. In an interview with Screen Rant’s Grant Hermanns for her upcoming movie Alma and the Wolf, which releases on June 20, Li claimed that she was surprised by the success of Sinners. She stated the entire cast and crew knew the movie would be great, but she was surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reactions it received. Li also emphasized that she’s so happy Sinners brought people back into theaters. Read her full comments below:

We were all very surprised. We knew it was good, but we didn’t think it was going to be this mᴀssive. So we’re really just taking it in, and we’re so grateful. It was such a fantastic group of people, and I’m just glad that it was a film that not only brought people back into the theaters, but it also educated everyone on why it’s important for us to go back to the theaters.

What Li Jun Li’s Comments Mean For Sinners

Sinners Was A Major Critical & Commercial Success

Even though we’re not even halfway through 2025 yet, it’s already clear that Sinners will be regarded as one of the best movies of the year. Not only has it received outstanding reviews from critics and audiences, but it also broke numerous box office records. For example, Sinners had the best opening weekend for an R-rated movie since 2021’s Halloween Kills with a haul of $48 million. Additionally, it is the highest-grossing original movie at the domestic box office of both the 2020s and the 2010s, which is an extremely impressive accomplishment.

The success of Sinners proves that people are still interested in seeing original movies in theaters.

As of this writing, Sinners has made $275 million domestically and almost $86 million in international markets, totaling to a worldwide box office haul of $361 million (via Box Office Mojo). As Li states, it is amazing that Sinners’ positive reviews encouraged people to watch the film in theaters. Coogler really wanted people to watch the movie on the biggest screen possible, so it’s amazing that it resonated with audiences all over the world. Additionally, the success of Sinners proves that people are still interested in seeing original movies in theaters.

Our Take On Li Jun Li’s Comments About Sinners

Making Sinners Was A Great Experience For Li & The Rest Of The Cast

Grace Chow (Li Jun Li) looking worried in Sinners

Even though she wasn’t one of the main characters in the movie, Li’s Grace was a great addition to Sinners. Grace’s actions in Sinners, namely her inviting the vampires into the club, have proven to be quite controversial and have led to some fun online debates. Therefore, I’m glad that Li enjoyed her experience making the movie and is grateful for its reception. After Sinners and the upcoming Alma and the Wolf, I can’t wait to see what Li does next.
