Warning: Contains SPOILERS for 28 Days Later & 28 Weeks Later!
28 Years Later has released a promotional website, and here is every clue and update that the website contains about what happened in the world of the movie. 28 Years Later takes place years after its predecessor, 28 Weeks Later, meaning that the world has significantly changed during this time gap. The end of 28 Weeks Later teased a much larger story for its sequel, with the Rage Virus making it to mainland Europe. The 28 Years Later website provides updates on this story, and here is everything we know ahead of the film’s release.
28 Years Later is the start of an all-new trilogy, with it being followed up by 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple as well as a third film. The trailers for 28 Years Later have proven that the United Kingdom and its surrounding areas have only gotten worse as time has gone on, although humans have managed to survive the decades of Rage Virus terror. The new trilogy will follow the characters within the Unconditional Isolation Zone, but the in-universe website RageLeaks.net has revealed a lot about what the outside world thinks about the UIZ.

The Second Wave Was Pushed Back After 28 Weeks Later
France Fought Off The Rage Virus
As it turns out, the shocking ending of 28 Weeks Later may not have that much of an influence on 28 Years Later. In the second film, it was revealed that some humans are immune, with one of them boarding a helicopter and heading to France. However, the end of the film reveals that the helicopter crashed on the way back. This led to the spread of the Rage Virus into France, with the film ending as the zombies invade Paris. This set up the possibility that the Rage Virus could have spread to the rest of mainland Europe in 28 Years Later.
However, this isn’t the case. The file labeled “Narrows” was written by an unknown author who lives outside of the Unconditional Isolation Zone. He explains that when the second wave reached Europe (presumably referring to the second wave seen in 28 Weeks Later), “we pushed it back.” Then, the Atlantic Wall was established. This is a military defense blockade that stretches across the coasts of France, Belgium, and The Netherlands, preventing the spread of the Rage Virus across the English Channel. Here is the full excerpt from the website:
If you’re reading this, you know this map. We’ve all seen it for so long, we practically don’t even notice it anymore. But today I found myself looking at the Dover Narrows. There’s only 20 miles of water separating Dover and Calais. That’s all. They’re probably the most vigilantly guarded miles in the world.
The second wave reached Europe, and we pushed it back. The Atlantic Wall has held ever since. We tell ourselves it always will. But how can we know for sure if they won’t tell us what’s really happening?

Militaries Are Patrolling The Unconditional Isolation Zone
Keeping The Rage Virus At Bay
The map from the “Narrows” file provides a full look at the Unconditional Isolation Zone. The Rage Virus has spread throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, but the UIZ goes beyond the land. Instead, a mᴀssive circle perimeter has been drawn around the countries, with the Rage Virus being contained within these areas. The map also shows several military ships surrounding the area, presumably patrolling it for zombies and other Rage Virus related activities.
The area immediately surrounding the land is marked as a No Fly Zone, meaning that some planes may have somehow been sH๏τ down. West of the UIZ is labeled the “PCZ North Atlantic Patrol,” while East of the UIZ is labeled “PCZ North Sea Patrol.” The excerpt refers to the 20 miles of water that separate Dover from Calasis as “the most vigilantly guarded miles in the world.” One of the markings on the map also reveal that NATO is involved, meaning that holding off the Rage Virus is most likely a worldwide effort.

Governments Are Hiding Details About The Rage Virus
But Nobody Knows Why
Despite the Rage Virus outbreak being one of the most well-known stories in the world of 28 Years Later, governments are not being fully honest about it. The end of the “Narrows” file asks “But how can we know for sure if they won’t tell us what’s really happening?.” Because of this, it is clear that much information about the Rage Virus is being hidden.
Another file labeled “Need to Know” contains text messages from two individuals. One of the individuals is asking for “concrete” evidence of something, such as pH๏τos and lab reports. The respondent explains that this stuff is kept “pretty locked down,” being worried that he might lose his position. This implies that individuals from the mainland are attempting to sneak information out of the UIZ, and that for some reason the nations don’t want them to.

The Sound Of Bells Is Coming From Inside The UIZ
Is It A Communication System?
Arguably the oddest finding on the 28 Weeks Later promotional website is the file labeled “Bells.” The file contains some text and a distorted audio clip. The text explains that the audio sounds like bells, with it wondering if there are still churches at the communes within the UIZ.
It is also speculated that this could be a system of communication within the UIZ, such as a warning system. The UIZ could sound the alarms whenever Rage zombies are present, although it isn’t known how this system was set up or who runs it.

A Swedish Boat Collided With Something & Sank
Have The Zombies Become Aquatic?
The file labeled “Mayday” contains a transmission from a Swedish ship. The ship, named the HMS Öresund, is requesting help from anybody who is listening. After giving their coordinates, the ship states that they have collided with an unknown object. The ship is taking on water, and two minutes later, they state “Fire.” This probably means that the ship has caught fire, but it could also mean that gunfire has begun aboard the ship.
There are several possibilities as to what this could mean. It could imply that the zombies have taken to the water, or that a new type of water-based zombie has evolved. It could also be that another ship struck the Öresund, whether that be a military ship or a ship from the commune.

Human Communes Exist In The UIZ (& The Military Is Monitoring Them)
Survivors Have Avoided The Rage Virus
Several of the files imply that human communes exist within the UIZ, something that is seen from the 28 Years Later trailers. The “Aerial Recon” file shows a tall tower of skulls located in the center of several vertical structures. It isn’t known if this is human-made or zombie-made, but it is the clear product of intelligent design. “Surveillance Report, Lindisfarne Commune” shows several other images of one of the communes. The coastal commune is said to have a “stable social order” and that there have been “zero attempts at breaking quarantine.”
This surveillance report indicates that NATO militaries are clearly watching this commune, although it isn’t revealed why. The secrecy surrounding the human survivors in the UIZ is a commonly recurring theme throughout the 28 Years Later website, meaning that this will most likely be a storyline throughout the trilogy. The presence of human survivors may be a secret, or the presence of new types of Rage Virus zombies could be a secret.

Scientists Are Researching A New Rage Zombie Variant
The Zombies May Have Evolved
Horrifyingly, humans and zombies aren’t the only presence in the UIZ. The file “Variant?” is an email between two scientists discussing the presence of a new lifeform. Here is what one of the emails says:
“Here’s what my team is prepared to say with the limited data we’ve been provided.
We’ve observed significant morphological and behavioral differences in this variant. Tissue engorgement is apparent throughout the body, from some unknown process that we don’t understand. They’re primarily quadrupedal, though it appears they can go bipedal under duress. Most pronounced is the difference in locomotion. They are significantly slower, though we can’t tell if that’s due to their size or some other cause.
It’s impossible to speculate further without more hard data. I know you’re tired of hearing this song from me. We’d really love more to work with but at this point this is what we have…”
So, it is clear that something else is inhabiting the UIZ. These zombies are larger and slower and walk on their legs and arms. These horrifying creatures may pose a major threat in 28 Years Later, making their addition to this website exciting.
