Dune: Part Three receives a very positive update from Hans Zimmer ahead of shooting starting very soon. After the critical and commercial success of 2021’s Dune and 2024’s Dune: Part Two, which adapted Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, director Denis Villeneuve is prioritizing the development of Dune: Part Three, which will adapt Dune Messiah, the second novel in Herbert’s series, and continue the story of Paul Atreides (Timotheé Chalamet). Robert Pattinson is reportedly in talks for the role of the villain Scytale, along with the expected returns of Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and more.
During an interview with Variety at the premiere of F1 The Movie, Hans Zimmer provided a very positive update on Dune: Part Three. Asked how the writing process is coming along, the composer says he “just spoke to Denis [Villeneuve]” the other day, and while they are making progress, there’s still a long way to go. Read his full response or watch the video below:
I just spoke to Denis [Villeneuve]. We’ve got something – we are on our way, let me put it this way. But there’s a lot of desert still in front of us.

What Hans Zimmer’s Comments Mean For Dune: Part 3
It’s Another Positive Update
Hans Zimmer’s comments are just the latest positive update for Dune: Part Three. Since before the release of Part Two, Villeneuve has been working on a third movie based on Dune Messiah, even saying that the script was “almost finished.” However, it wasn’t until a month after Part Two‘s release that it was reported that Villeneuve had officially started developing the third movie, with filming reportedly expected to start in summer 2025, with a scheduled release on December 18, 2026.
If everything stays on schedule, the turnaround between Part Two and Part Three will be quick. However, Zimmer got a head start on composing the score. During the second day of shooting Part Two, the composer started writing the score for the third film after Villeneuve “wordlessly” placed a copy of Dune Messiah on his desk, Zimmer saying, “I know where we’re going and I know we’re not done.” Zimmer also teased new musical themes exploring Paul’s evolving inner conflict and destiny.
Our Take On Hans Zimmer Scoring Dune: Part 3
The Composer’s Return Is Crucial
Hans Zimmer’s return on Dune: Part Three will be crucial for fully realizing Denis Villeneuve’s vision for the epic saga. His inventive, Oscar-winning score for 2021’s Dune helped elevate the adaptation, creating an otherworldly and mythic atmosphere. Dune Messiah features a drastically different tone, exploring darker and more introspective themes, so it will be interesting to see how Zimmer’s score evolves for Dune: Part Three as the story shifts from heroic rise to tragic consequence.
