James Gunn Confirms His “Favorite” DC Universe Project Still Hasn’t Been Announced While Teasing Mystery Movies & TV Shows

Several DC Universe projects get new updates from James Gunn, including multiple that have yet to be fully announced. The DCU franchise is just getting started, as multiple films and series have been announced for Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters,” with many of them being in various stages of development or production. Gunn’s Superman movie is set to roll out this summer, while Peacemaker season 2 will premiere in August, but there are more things to look forward to from DC Studios.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn was asked about the near future for the DCU in terms of filming and what may be going into production next. To begin with, Gunn addressed what he will be doing next – as Superman and Peacemaker season 2 are nearing the end of post-production – while also addressing what film or TV show is the closest to starting principal pH๏τography soon:

I’m about to wrap Peacemaker. Peacemaker and Superman are both going to end up being sound mixed and color timed at about the same time in the next two weeks. We’re going to see early episodes of that soon. Lanterns is halfway through filming. We’re going to see early episodes of that soon.

Then there’s another TV show that’s my favorite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon. It’s just my favorite thing. And then there’s the movie…Oh s—! I don’t know what I’m allowed to say or not say, but there’s a couple of other movies that are being written, one of which is in pretty good shape, another which is kind of closer to the start, but we feel positive about. And then there’s a thing I’m writing, which I think it’s okay…. So what will be the next thing after Clayface is not 100 percent certain, but it’s pretty certain.

Gunn was also asked about how many of the “undisclosed тιтles” are projects that have either been announced or are still being kept under wraps, as he teased the following:

My favorite thing has not been announced at all. One of the scripts people kind of know about. My script people don’t know about. The other script people don’t know about. So it’s mostly stuff people don’t know about…. A couple of those things [announced in January 2023] are in pretty good shape in terms of coming up, but there was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company. And so that’s one of the main things.

As Gunn has been writing his next project, the DC Studios co-CEO also added that he intends to direct it, sharing the following with the outlet:

Well, I always leave saying I’m going to direct something till I’m actually done with the screenplay, and then I say, “Yeah, I want to do this.” But it’s probably what I will direct. Yeah, probably, to be totally realistic. Yes, probably.

What James Gunn’s Comments Mean For The DC Universe

One of the biggest differences between the previous DC Films division at Warner Bros. Discovery and something like DC Studios, which is a separate enтιтy, is how projects are going forward. Gunn has made it very clear since he and Peter Safran launched DC Studios that a movie or TV show, regardless of whether it is DCU or Elseworlds, will not move forward until they have a completed script and vision for said character. That is why the DCU’s Batman and Wonder Woman movies have yet to get added to the slate for the rebooted franchise, as they are still being written.

From Gunn’s recent comments –including his references to the matter of the mystery project that he has yet to announce that is his favorite one – it’s evident that DC Studios is avoiding some of the mistakes of DC Films. While DC Films would rush projects into production that suffered from last-minute re-writes to mᴀssive changes behind the scenes, DC Studios is not taking that approach. This is why something like the new Clayface movie is ready to go into production this year, because they had the time to properly develop the vision and screenplay for the film.

Our Take On James Gunn’s DC Universe Comments

New DC Studios Logo Revealed

Gunn being as open as he is about the direction for DC Studios is a big part of why it is so exciting to see where he is taking not just the DCU in the future, but also the direction of DC in live-action in general. As Gunn confirmed recently that a DC movie got canceled, it’s refreshing to see an executive being candid about when something is or isn’t working out, and when explaining how they want to approach their projects across the big and small screens. With so much to look forward to with the DCU, it will be intriguing to see what else they have in store for fans.
