Horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan recently shared an update about the production of his upcoming reboot of 1973’s The Exorcist. Flanagan has written and directed several acclaimed horror films and TV shows, including The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mᴀss, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Having established himself as a horror master, Flanagan has generated plenty of excitement for his movie based on William Friedkin’s The Exorcist.
Responding to an inquiry on Tumblr, Flanagan revealed that his Exorcist movie hasn’t entered production yet. Right now, after adapting Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck, Flanagan is working on adapting King’s Carrie as a series for Amazon Prime Video. Though Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist movie was originally scheduled to premiere on March 13, 2026, Flanagan said that the film won’t be completed by then. Fortunately, he claimed his Exorcist film is still very much alive, saying there’s “nothing to worry about.”

It’s unknown how far Flanagan is into the production of Carrie at this point, as he has only just started revealing the show’s cast. If Flanagan does go straight into filming his Exorcist movie after Carrie, it is more likely that the latter will premiere sometime in 2027.
Fortunately, the director has already hinted that he has the story laid out for his Exorcist movie, so the filming shouldn’t take that long. Flanagan previously teased that his Exorcist movie will be a “unique” and “surprisingly timely” take on the original film. On top of that, when Flanagan discussed his Exorcist film, he promised that it would be “the scariest movie [he’s] ever made.” Considering how terrifying films like Hush, Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and Ouija: Origin of Evil were, this statement makes his Exorcist movie sound even more exciting, which should make it worth the extra wait.

While the prospect of Flanagan directing an Exorcist movie is very exciting, it’s no surprise that it will take longer than anticipated to come out. There have barely been updates about the production since the Exorcist movie was announced in 2024. Also, not only has he been busy filming Carrie and The Life of Chuck, but he’s also been working on developing Stephen King’s The Dark Tower novels into a mᴀssive TV adaptation.
However, if he needs more time to make both his Exorcist film and Carrie series right, then he should take the time he needs to make both projects as terrifying and brilliant as possible.
