David Tennant has revealed what his dream Marvel Cinematic Universe role would be, and I am begging Marvel Studios to make it a reality. Tennant’s history with the MCU is certainly an interesting one, as he has already played a role in Netflix’s Defenders timeline. Tennant portrayed the villain Kilgrave, also known as the Purple Man, in Jessica Jones season 1, with the тιтular character of that show set to return to the MCU in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again season 2.
This continues the complex discussions about whether the Netflix shows are canon to the core franchise, be it the Infinity Saga or upcoming Marvel movies in the Multiverse Saga. Thanks to Daredevil: Born Again and its references to the Netflix shows, it seems these installments are canon to the MCU after years of debate. Upcoming Marvel TV shows will only further solidify this, rendering Tennant’s role as Kilgrave an official part of the franchise. Regardless, the illustrious actor has outlined another role he would love to have in the MCU, and I hope Marvel will make it come to fruition.
David Tennant Would Be A Perfect Addition To The MCU’s Upcoming Releases
Tennant’s Dream Role Has Never Had A Better Time To Come True
The character that Tennant wished to play was Reed Richards of The Fantastic Four. When looking at the immediate future of the MCU, Tennant’s role could be perfect. Of course, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is unlikely to feature Tennant as the character, given that Pedro Pascal is the MCU’s most prominent version of Mister Fantastic for the foreseeable future. However, with two Avengers movies on the horizon and the Multiverse Saga in full swing, Tennant could be a perfect inclusion in Marvel’s upcoming releases.
Not only do the logistics work out, but Tennant could easily portray Reed Richards. His role as the Doctor in Doctor Who showcased Tennant’s range, with the Doctor’s intellect being a big facet of his character. Translating this to another smart character in Reed Richards would not be difficult, and Tennant has a mᴀssive on-screen presence. His chemistry with those around him and general charisma would make Tennant an excellent leading man in a superhero movie. When combined with the Multiverse Saga’s possibilities, his inclusion in the MCU’s upcoming releases becomes a perfect opportunity.
David Tennant’s MCU Dream Role Isn’t Impossible Thanks To The Multiverse Saga
The Multiverse Opens Many Doors
Naturally, the main questions over Tennant appearing in the MCU as Reed Richards would link to his previous role as Kilgrave and Pascal’s casting as the character in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Despite these two hiccups, though, the Multiverse Saga gives ample opportunity for the franchise to include a variant of Reed played by Tennant. The final Marvel movie of 2025, the aforementioned The Fantastic Four reboot, is unlikely to do this as it would only detract from Pedro Pascal’s performance as the smartest man in the Marvel Universe.
With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars right around the corner, though, Tennant’s dream could become a reality. Both movies are expected to delve heavily into the MCU multiverse and, while the focus of both films will undoubtedly be on the core group of heroes announced as part of Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast list, cameos are to be expected. With Reed Richards tying so closely to the villain of both movies, Dr. Doom, it would make sense for a Tennant cameo as the Mister Fantastic of another universe to be included.
Tennant’s cameo would not overshadow Pascal’s seeming starring role in the finale of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga…
This way, both prior issues with Tennant portraying the character would be avoided. There would be no overlap with Kilgrave, as he and Tennant’s Reed would be from different universes. Moreover, Tennant’s cameo would not overshadow Pascal’s seeming starring role in the finale of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, as he is only a variant of another dimension.
The MCU Has Already Justified David Tennant Being A Mister Fantastic Variant
To further support this theory, Marvel has already justified having another major actor as a Mister Fantastic variant. In 2022, a popular fancast for Mister Fantastic was included in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In this movie, John Krasinski portrayed the character in a brief cameo, setting up the possibility of multiple variants of Reed across the multiverse. Tennant playing yet another one of these variants would not only make sense given the status of the MCU‘s multiverse, but it would also offer a cool cameo for fans all while providing the actor with the dream Marvel role he once missed out on.
