Margot Robbie’s First Movie Since Barbie Looks Even More Ambitious (& Therapeutic)

Margot Robbie is one of the biggest stars in the film industry today, and it is for good reason. The actor became known to the world when she played Naomi Lapaglia in the Martin Scorsese drama The Wolf of Wall Street. This movie earned her great praise, paving the pathway for other parts, including an Oscar-nominated role in the biopic film I, Tonya. Since then, the star has become a multi-hyphenate talent, contributing her time behind the scenes as a producer in addition to continuing acting.

Robbie’s most notable project to date is Barbie. This film saw her both as a producer and leading actor, playing the key version of the iconic Mattel doll. Barbie is also the highest-grossing movie in her career by a long sH๏τ, making over $1.4 billion. The film’s success situates Robbie on an even more fruitful career path. Now, a trailer has been released for a new Robbie project, and it looks incredibly exciting and ambitious.

The First Trailer Has Been Released For A Big Bold Beautiful Journey

The Movie Comes Out In September

One of Robbie’s upcoming works is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. From visionary director Kogonada, the movie is an adventure drama centered around two strangers and the surprising journey that connects them. Robbie plays one of the lead roles opposite Colin Farrell, and the supporting cast includes Hamish Linklater, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Lily Rabe, Billy Magnussen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Sarah Gadon, and Brandon Perea. The script was penned by Seth Reiss. A Big, Bold, Beautiful Journey is set for release on September 19 of this year.

Recently, Sony Pictures Entertainment released the first trailer for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. The movie takes a closer look at Robbie’s role as Sarah. Though they start the film as strangers, the pair’s lives turn around when David’s car’s GPS offers him the opportunity to go on “a big bold beautiful journey.” This journey leads him to Sarah, who the car tells him to pick up, and whose own car has coincidentally broken down. This journey will transport them through time and to some fantastical places.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey Is Margot Robbie’s First On-Screen Movie Since Barbie

She Has Been Focusing On Producing Work

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey will be Robbie’s first acting role since Barbie. In the time between then and now, she has been honing in on her producing career, working behind the scenes on movies such as Saltburn and My Old ᴀss as well as the Netflix miniseries Sirens. In addition to the Kogonada film, Robbie is set to appear as Catherine Earnshaw in Emerald Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights, but that is not set to release until 2026. This means A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is coming next, marking her first post-Barbie acting role.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey Looks Very Ambitious & Therapeutic

It Is Both Fantastical And Emotional

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey looks to be both ambitious and highly emotional. The movie takes on fantastical proportions, where doors in the forest or in a greenhouse transport David and Sarah to other universes and timelines. Evidenced by After Yang, Kogonada has proven himself worthy of immersing audiences in near-future sci-fi worlds that are infused with magical realism. Barbie also transported audiences through various environments in fantastical ways, making her a good person to take on such a role.

As much as A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is fantastical, however, it is also grounded in intense emotion. There’s a therapeutic quality to David and Sarah’s journey, some of which involves traveling through childhood events to resolve some of their inner turmoil. This journey is particularly resonant for Robbie’s character, as she has to resolve some feelings about her mother’s illness. On a narrative level, this tale is also a great follow-up to Barbie, which also covered themes relating to self-esteem and finding oneself.
