George R. R. Martin Concisely Responds To A24’s Elden Ring Movie Being Directed By Alex Garland

Following the recent announcement that Alex Garland will be helming a screen adaptation of Elden Ring for A24, fans of the gaming franchise have been somewhat split in their reactions. While it’s very exciting to see such a popular, narrative-driven adventure game being adapted for the big screen, there’s always the risk that it won’t quite translate accurately in this new format. But while the concept of an Elden Ring movie is understandably polarizing, one of the key figures behind the game’s creation has spoken out in favor of the decision.

Posting on his long-running forum Not A Blog, George R.R. Martin has endorsed Alex Garland as the director of A24’s Elden Ring movie. The Game of Thrones author was credited with much of the writing and worldbuilding of Elden Ring, contributing strongly to the locations, backstory, and characters that were featured in the game. He’s become a key spokesperson for this fantasy property, and fans were understandably anxious to hear what he thought of the announcement. Check out his comments below:

A24 is a kickᴀss studio, and Alex Garland is a first rate director.

What George R.R. Martin’s Comments Mean For The Elden Ring Movie

The Author May Know More Than He’s Already Confirmed

While it’s unclear to what extent (if at all) Martin will be involved in the writing process for Garland’s Elden Ring movie, it’s very encouraging to know that he approves of the choice. The game will be very difficult to adapt due to its large-scale, sprawling backstory and lore – which is exactly why Martin was asked to contribute in the first place. His A Song of Ice and Fire books proved that he was capable of handling an immense fantasy property like this, and he brought much of that same talent to the adventure game.

George R.R. Martin famously spoke out against Game of Thrones’ final seasons when the HBO show began to deviate from the story of his books. Martin recognizes quality when he sees it, so the fact that he’s such a fan of Garland’s previous work can only be a good sign for the future of Elden Ring. Although movies like Ex Machina and Civil War are completely different from the world of Elden Ring, Garland has proven himself to be a very talented writer over the years and should be able to bring that same ability to his next project.

Our Take On George R.R. Martin’s Elden Ring Comments

Martin Is A Reliable Source Of Authority On The Project

Ultimately, the Elden Ring movie is going to come under immense criticism from existing fans no matter what. There’s never going to be a “safe” choice for the film’s director, but Martin’s comments should hopefully have eased fans’ minds somewhat.

Though “first-rate” doesn’t reveal too much about his thoughts, it’s likely that he’s been consulted about the project and will have more to say in the future. But for now, this should be enough to prove that Elden Ring’s cinematic adaptation is on the right track.
