James Gunn’s Superman Movie Rating Continues A 19-Year Man Of Steel Trend

DC Studios’ Superman movie from director James Gunn lands its official film rating as the DC Universe gets ready to debut the new Man of Steel. While it has been years since Krypton’s last son had his own film, July 2025 is changing that with Gunn’s Superman movie, which will serve as a crucial foundation for the new DCU franchise. As DC Studios has been busy marketing Superman through trailers, posters, and various merchandise reveals, a crucial detail for the film has finally been confirmed.

With David Corenswet’s solo film getting ready for its big summer release, Film Ratings has confirmed Superman is rated PG-13 for violence, action and language. This continues a nearly two-decade trend for the Man of Tomorrow’s film history. Ever since 2006’s Superman Returns, live-action Superman movies – including Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League – have been rated PG-13, while the Christopher Reeve installments were all rated PG.

What The Superman Movie Rating Means

Since Gunn’s Superman movie is being rated PG-13, it carries that same rating as Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, but there is a slight difference. The 2013 installment was rated “for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language.” From all the Superman trailers that have been released so far, it’s clear that Gunn and Snyder’s respective Superman films are vastly different from one another, despite having the same rating. The same can be said when looking at Gunn’s Superman and Snyder’s Batman V Superman, both rated PG-13, while the 2016 film landed its rating “for intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality.”

Looking at Gunn’s superhero filmography for comparison, Superman is more in line with the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy when it comes to the rating, as all three of the MCU installments were also rated PG-13. The only DC movie Gunn has made previously was The Suicide Squad as part of the DCEU movie timeline, but the 2021 installment was rated R, due to “strong violence and gore, language throughout, some Sєxual references, drug use and brief graphic nudity.” With the nature of Superman, PG-13 is the obvious rating for the Man of Steel’s DCU movie, especially as DC Studios aims to bring back a brighter version of the DC legend.

Our Take On The Superman Movie Rating

After seeing the latest Superman movie trailer, it would have been shocking if Gunn’s DCU film had landed any other rating than PG-13. But from what has been presented with Gunn’s take on Superman, and where they are going with him in the DCU, this will ideally be the beginning of a long era. As July 11 gets closer, the world will soon get to witness Superman for themselves when Corenswet brings one of Hollywood’s most iconic heroes back to the big screen.
