One Of Blumhouse’s Most Heavily-Memed Movies Is Getting A Sequel With Original Star Returning

A viral Blumhouse movie is getting its first sequel after more than half a decade. While Blumhouse movies have taken on a number of different genres including drama (Whiplash), musical (Jem and the Holograms) and more, the production company is best known for its horror movies. In fact, their Top 10 biggest hits are all entries in the horror genre, including the Oscar-winning Jordan Peele movie Get Out, the video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s, and the viral smash hit killer doll movie M3GAN.

Blumhouse has also had a hand in establishing multiple major horror franchises including The Purge, Paranormal Activity, and Insidious. Additionally, both M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy’s have sequels set to debut before the end of 2025. The company has also been behind new installments in pre-established franchises in the genre, including a new trilogy of Halloween movies and 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which will be followed by an unтιтled installment directed by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mᴀss).

Ma Is Getting A Sequel

A Key Star Is Returning

Ma shall return. The original 2019 Tate Taylor movie starred Octavia Spencer as a vengeful woman whose offer to let teenagers party in her basement seems enticing at first but quickly turns disturbing. While the movie was a box office success, grossing $61.2 million against a $5 million budget, it has since garnered an even bigger audience online. The movie has spawned a number of Ma memes, including various captions on images of Ma staring creepily and the character being pH๏τoshopped onto the posters for movies with slightly altered тιтles such as “RoMA” and “Call Ma By Your Name.”

The cast of Ma also included Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers, Corey Fogelmanis, Luke Evans, Missi Pyle, and Allison Janney.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Blumhouse announced that a sequel to Ma is in the works during their Business of Fear symposium on Tuesday. Octavia Spencer is set to return, reprising the тιтle role. No further details about the project have been revealed at the time of writing. Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum spoke about the fact that the movie has become a “social phenomenon” and said that “we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.” Read his full quote below:

Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say “don’t make me drink alone,” so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.

What This Means For Ma 2

Ma’s Ending Was Somewhat Ambiguous

Given the fact that the original movie was an enormous financial success that grossed more than 12 times its budget and has only grown in popularity since then, it makes sense that a sequel would eventually be announced. However, it remains to be seen how the тιтle character returns, as the Ma ending saw Octavia Spencer’s character seemingly preparing to die as she cradled the corpse of her victim Ben (Luke Evans) as her house burned down around them. It seems that the sequel will reveal that she ultimately changed her mind about accepting her fate.
