Suicide Squad star Jai Courtney addressed recent reports that he may return to the DC Universe as Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang. The actor first portrayed the role in 2016’s Suicide Squad before reprising it in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, the latter of which was directed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. Other notable cast members in these films include Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as ᴅᴇᴀᴅsH๏τ, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, John Cena as Peacemaker, and Idris Elba as Bloodsport. Despite surviving the first movie, Captain Boomerang was killed off in the opening scene of The Suicide Squad.
Speaking with Screen Rant’s Liam Crowley while promoting Dangerous Animals, Courtney addressed the possibility of returning to DC as either Captain Boomerang or in a new role:
Screen Rant: I mentioned Boomerang. You were in the headlines recently where you said that James might’ve not closed the door completely.
Jai Courtney: You can’t say anything these days. I actually should have bit my tongue because, by the way, James hasn’t said anything to me about anything, so that might’ve been a bit of clickbait. But, listen, all I’ve ever said is if someone called, I’ll show up and do that role again.
Screen Rant: Is it only for Boomerang though, or are you open to other roles in the DC world?
Jai Courtney: I mean, sure, whatever. I’m open to anything. We can always have a conversation. But I think where that’s coming from is, like, that’s just a role that I loved playing, and it was sad to give him up. So if there’s any more mileage to milk out of it, I’m your guy.
What Jai Courtney’s DCU Comments Mean
Previously, Courtney made headlines when his comments implied a Captain Boomerang return could be imminent. According to Courtney, Gunn reᴀssured him after he learned about his character’s fate in The Suicide Squad. The actor explained: “I was like, ‘Come on, man. Boomerang is cool.’ James is like, ‘You know these rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah.'”
Because of this interaction, Courtney said that “somewhere in the back of [his] mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.” Whether this comes to fruition can’t be ruled out by those films being set in the DC Extended Universe. While most cast members from that franchise will not cross over into the DCU, some characters such as Peacemaker and Waller are retaining the same actors as before. Since Courtney appeared alongside those two, he may be more likely for a comeback than other DCEU actors, whether as a variant or a resurrection of this iteration.
Our Take On Jai Courtney’s DCU Comments
Though Gunn’s reᴀssurance to Courtney holds weight both due to the former’s leadership role in DC and the comic precedent for characters to return from the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, it is unlikely that the actor will reprise his role. Peacemaker appears to be delving into the multiverse, given its recent teaser, which could create a natural entry point for Courtney. Alternatively, the DCU seems to be moving away from any major DCEU ᴀssociations. Nonetheless, Courtney was a fun part of the Suicide Squad duology, and he would be an ᴀsset to the DCU even in a different role.
