“We Are Now 100% Done” : James Gunn Reveals Final Edit Of Superman Is Now Complete

Per director James Gunn, visual effects for Superman have officially been completed, meaning the overall editing process for the first DC Universe film is complete. Set for a July 11 release, it stars David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, Anthony Carrigan, Edi Gathegi, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, and Nathan Fillion.

Superman follows Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Superman following an international incident that landed him in H๏τ water despite the hero saving many lives. This also drew the ire of Lex Luthor (Holt), who grew jealous of the attention received by Superman. The young hero will also encounter the Justice Gang, a group of corporate superheroes who see the world differently from the kind-hearted Man of Steel.

Taking to Instagram, Gunn shared a snapsH๏τ of himself and select cast members on set at the Daily Planet bullpen, where Clark Kent (Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Brosnahan) work. He captioned the post: “Our last visual effect sH๏τ has been finished and dropped into Superman. We are now 100% done. Thanks to all my collaborators! It has been a joy. And for the rest of you – I can’t wait for you to see the movie July 11.

What James Gunn’s Superman Post Means

Though it may seem odd that the edit was only just finalized, it is not uncommon for films, especially big-budget studio films like Superman, to have their effects tweaked close to the film’s release date. This is even more true when factoring in the amount of computer-generated effects used in most superhero films. Given Superman’s many abilities, it tracks that these visual effects would require a lot of time (and budget) to achieve convincingly. Moreover, Superman was likely scored almost entirely after filming wrapped, which could contribute to editing time.

Some reports speculated that studio interference was the root cause of either the additional edits or the “short” 129-minute runtime. However, Gunn shut this down in no uncertain terms, saying: “Zero truth to that. And they couldn’t even if that’s something they wanted to. It’s a DC Studios film.

Despite the rumors surrounding Superman’s production, the editing process wrapping up this close to its release is not a significant cause for concern. Many films continue to make changes right up until release, as do some television shows, such as Stranger Things. Gunn has maintained that Superman is very much the movie he set out to make; his celebration of this milestone and the people who made it possible is wholesome—not worrying.
