Lilo & Sтιтch Remake Director Knows Where The Franchise Should Go After $637M Success

After Lilo & Sтιтch‘s mᴀssive success at the box office, a continuation of some kind seems inevitable, and the remake’s director recently offered his thoughts on where they might go from here. 2025’s Lilo & Sтιтch follows the same basic story as the 2002 animated original, where lonely six-year-old Lilo (Maia Kealoha) adopts a “dog” that she is unaware is a fugitive alien and names him Sтιтch (Chris Sanders). However, Sтιтch is an illegal genetic experiment, and his creator Jumba Jookiba (Zach Galifianakis) actually made hundreds more like him, which is the clear set-up for a sequel.

During an interview with Variety, Lilo & Sтιтch 2025 director Dean Fleischer Camp said he would return for a sequel “if it was the right idea.” He also suggested this might not be just a straightforward theatrical sequel, and he would be interested in bringing Lilo & Sтιтch back to animation with a TV series. Check out his comments below:

Variety: You know, there’s an entire Stichverse out there. Would you want to do the sequel or anything else if the opportunity presented itself?

Fleischer Camp: If it was the right idea. I wouldn’t do it just because there’s a new market demand for it. But I also really like the idea of doing an animated spin-off as an episodic or limited series.

What Dean Fleischer Camp’s Comments Mean For The Future Of Lilo & Sтιтch

What Kind Of Sequel Disney Makes May Determine The Director’s Return

It’s clear at this point that the possibility of a Lilo & Sтιтch sequel is being discussed, but Fleischer Camp’s comments present some unexpected ideas. Presumably, if he were to make an animated spinoff series, it would adhere to the continuity of the live-action movie rather than build upon the previously established animated universe. In the 2000s, the original Lilo & Sтιтch movie was followed by a few sequel movies as well as a series about Lilo and Sтιтch finding all of Jumba’s experiments after they were released upon Hawaii.

To distinguish it from the older properties, a new animated Lilo & Sтιтch series might also explore different styles of animation, which could be yet another way Lilo & Sтιтch changes Disney remakes. However, after Lilo & Sтιтch‘s mᴀssive box office success, the studio might push for a traditional sequel to be released in theaters. Whether Fleischer Camp himself becomes involved with this may depend on the story itself, or Disney will turn to another director. They would most likely be interested in adapting the plots of Lilo & Sтιтch 2: Sтιтch Has a Glitch or Sтιтch! The Movie.

Our Take On Lilo & Sтιтch 2025 Getting A Sequel

Lilo & Sтιтch Will Need To Keep Exploring Its Themes In Fresh Ways

There is a surprising amount of material to work with if Disney wants to keep remaking Lilo & Sтιтch, and not all of it is gratuitous. For instance, the storyline of the experiments actually pushes the original installment’s themes of family, as rather than viewing them as dangerous and irredeemable beings, they are affectionately referred to as Sтιтch’s “cousins” and Lilo names each one of them. Like with this year’s hit film, if they find ways to maintain the emotional core while exploring some alternate scenarios — with being open to different mediums as a bonus — I think this could be a worthwhile venture.
