I Think I Know Exactly How Thor Will Die In Avengers: Doomsday Based On The Secret Wars Comics & One Awful Theory They Create

Thor’s death in Avengers: Doomsday seems more likely than ever, especially if the MCU decides to adapt one specific Marvel Comics storyline. Doomsday is slated to release at the end of 2026, and filming seems to be well underway. The film promises to be the MCU’s largest-scale project yet with a huge cast, since the Avengers are going to need all the help they can get in the fight versus Doom. From members of the Thunderbolts to the X-Men, 27 actors have been confirmed to appear so far.

Although the magic of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame seemed like a once-in-a-life-time experience, Doomsday is going to be interesting in its own way. Many of the confirmed characters are part of the new generation, so this will be their first time teaming up under the Avengers name. Of course, there will still be some members of the original generation present such as Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. The very first person to actually be confirmed for Doomsday back in March 2025 was Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and it seems like it may be his last MCU appearance.

There Have Been Theories Thor Will Die In Avengers: Doomsday For Some Time Now

Hemsworth Has Portrayed Thor For 15 Years

Hemsworth has portrayed Thor in the MCU for over a decade, marking one of the longest arcs for any one character. Introduced back in Phase 1, Thor has the most solo projects with four movies. He hasn’t been seen in the MCU since 2022’s Thor: Love & Thunder, so the confirmation that he was going to appear in Avengers: Doomsday seemed like a good sign. However, many are theorizing that this will be his last MCU appearance. If any character is to die in Doomsday, it’d make sense for it to be Thor.

After the mixed reception to Thor: Love & Thunder, it was clear that Thor’s MCU story was starting to run its course. If Thor’s story is to end, it’d make sense for it to be in a big moment like an Avengers movie, and as we’ve seen with the other original Avengers, the end usually means death. Hemsworth’s recent video has only added fuel to the fire as he said that portraying Thor has been an honor. The video may just seem like a tribute to the character, but it does feel like he’s saying goodbye to him in a way.

Marvel’s Comic Build-Up To 2015’s Secret Wars Could Be The Perfect Way For The MCU Hero To Die

“Time Runs Out” Features Thor’s Death

If Thor is set to die in Avengers: Doomsday, then the studio should take a page from the comics. The “Time Runs Out” comic storyline written by Jonathan Hickman serves as a prelude to 2015’s “Secret Wars”. It tells the story of the months leading up to the Final Incursion between Earth-616 and Earth-1610. The powerful race of cosmic enтιтies called the Beyonders wanted to see what would happen if they destroyed multiple dimensions simultaneously, so they planted Molecule Man on different planets as a ticking time bomb of sorts.

The incoming calamity forces the Avengers and the Illuminati to eventually team up to try and stop the incursion, resulting in a battle against the Beyonders. Thor, along with the hero Hyperion, sacrifice themselves in the seemingly unwinnable Beyonders fight, though it ultimately couldn’t help to stop disaster from striking. Considering that Doomsday will be the lead-up to Secret Wars, if the MCU has to kill off Thor, having him die in a similar style to this storyline would ensure that he gets a heroic and comic-accurate death.

I’m Still Hoping The MCU Doesn’t Kill Thor Off

The End Of A Character’s Arc Shouldn’t Just Mean Death

Considering how long Hemsworth has portrayed Thor in the MCU, I wouldn’t blame him if he wanted to wrap up this chapter of his career in Doomsday. However, I’m still really hoping that the MCU doesn’t see killing Thor off as the only option. The end of a character’s MCU run doesn’t have to equal death, as we’ve previously seen in some capacity with Steve Rogers. Thor has already experienced so much loss in his life that he deserves a peaceful ending for himself.

While it would be heroic for Thor to sacrifice himself for the greater cause, he also doesn’t have to prove himself to anyone anymore. He’s proven time and time again in the MCU that he’s heroic and worthy, so killing him off to send some sort of message to the audience seems redundant. Now more than ever, it feels like Avengers: Doomsday is going to be Hemsworth’s goodbye to the MCU. Whether that means death for the character or not, I just hope that Marvel honors Thor’s legacy in an appropriate way.
