Lilo & Sтιтch Box Office Smashes Huge Global Milestone That Brings It Even Closer To $1 Billion

Lilo & Sтιтch continues to climb the box office chart. The 2025 movie, which was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, is a live-action remake of Disney’s 2002 animated movie of the same name and follows orphaned Hawaiian girl Lilo (Maia Kealoha) bonding with a chaotic, exiled, alien genetic experiment named Sтιтch (Chris Sanders) while her sister Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong) attempts to prove that she is a viable guardian. The Lilo & Sтιтch release has been making a splash from the very beginning, as its $146 million domestic debut marked the best Memorial Day opening weekend in box office history.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Lilo & Sтιтch is projected to close out its third weekend in theaters with a cumulative domestic total of $335.8 million and a global gross of $772 million. This makes it just the third movie of 2025 to pᴀss the $750 million milestone worldwide, behind A Minecraft Movie ($949.7 million) and Ne Zha 2 ($1.899 billion). This global total is nearly triple what the original animated movie earned in 2002, as it had only grossed $274.7 million by the end of its theatrical run.

What This Means For Lilo & Sтιтch

Will It Make $1 Billion?

By grossing $776 million, Lilo & Sтιтch has continued to climb the chart of the highest-performing Disney live-action remakes of all time, hitting No. 6 by surpᴀssing the entire worldwide box office runs of both 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King ($722.6 million) and 2014’s Maleficent ($758.5 million). It is also on track to continue climbing. Below, see a breakdown of how the five movies above it on the chart performed at the domestic box office during their third weekends, compared to their overall worldwide gross:

тιтle

Cumulative Domestic B.O. (Weekend 3)

Worldwide B.O. (Overall)

The Lion King (2019)

$431.1 million

$1.657 billion

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

$393.3 million

$1.263 billion

Aladdin (2019)

$232.6 million

$1.051 billion

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

$265.4 million

$1.025 billion

The Jungle Book (2016)

$253.4 million

$966.5 million

Lilo & Sтιтch (2025)

$335.8 million

TBD

While 2025’s Lilo & Sтιтch has consistently trailed behind two billion-dollar Disney remakes, namely 2017’s Beauty and the Beast and 2019’s The Lion King, it remains on track to surge up to No. 3 on the chart with a total that could very well land somewhere between $1.1 billion and $1.2 billion. That would also most likely make it Hollywood’s first billion-dollar тιтle of 2025, as A Minecraft Movie has slowed down enough that it no longer seems likely to hit that coveted milestone.

Our Take On The Lilo & Sтιтch Box Office

Will Moana Follow Its Lead?

Should the Lilo & Sтιтch box office hit $1 billion worldwide, that would make it the first remake of a 21st century Disney animated тιтle to pᴀss that milestone. This could set a precedent that spells good news for the upcoming live-action remake of 2016’s Moana, which comes just 10 years after the original hit and thus has somewhat questionable prospects because the movie has had less time to build up nostalgia for an out-and-out remake and is still part of a viable, ongoing animated franchise, given the billion-dollar performance of 2024’s Moana 2.
