Danny Ramirez Explains How The Russos’ Approach To Avengers: Doomsday Is Different From His Previous MCU Projects

Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Danny Ramirez opens up about working with the Russo brothers for Avengers: Doomsday. One of the biggest announcements to come out of 2024 for Marvel Studios was the reveal that Anthony and Joe Russo are coming back to the MCU to helm both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will properly wrap up The Multiverse Saga. The Avengers: Doomsday cast are currently working on the mᴀssive Phase 6 installment, which will see Robert Downey Jr. return to the franchise, but as Doctor Doom this time around.

While promoting Captain America: Brave New World’s home media release during an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Danny Ramirez, who is set to reprise the role of Joaquin Torres, a.k.a. the MCU’s new Falcon, discussed getting to work with the Russo brothers in Avengers: Doomsday in comparison to the Marvel Studios projects that he previously appeared in. After starring in both The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Brave New World, Ramirez stated the following about working with the Russos for Avengers: Doomsday:

Dude, so it’s actually so interesting that I was thinking about, you get to see the same world and tone from Kari [Skogland]’s eyes, Julius’, and the Russos’. Not necessarily [a different] tone, but the same world, and then you get to see the artistic interpretations of how someone creates that reality. You see their strengths, and you realize, “Oh, this is why Endgame was Endgame.” And you see why Julius and his movie Luce was so phenomenal. And you see Kari and Handmaid’s Tale, and you see how they really wrestle with the material in their own way. Every single time, I’m fascinated by how two humans could read the same page and interpret it in completely different ways, and create that reality of what makes them feel tension.

Somebody might be like, “It’s interpersonal dynamics that we build tension off of.” Some are like, “It’s because X, Y and Z in the external world is going to happen,” and feeling these different engines being created is so much of the joy. Because then, you get to be like, “Alright, I’m a constant in regards to I’m still playing my own character, but using these different directors, I then get to lean in and sculpt and see what is different about my character in this world and why.” So, I think that’s one of the beauties of being able to hold on to a character for that long is you explore it with other leaders.

And some leaders might interpret what you did previously different, and they’re like, “Oh, I’ll bring this up more,” or, “You see that thing you did there? Find that.” And I’m like, “Who knows how long I’ll keep playing Joaquin?” But I think the fascination would be like, “Who is going to shepherd him through story,” and then just to see what I discover with them. Like Taika did with Thor, I think that’s one of the most beautiful journeys of all, is Chris and Thor and all the directors, and their strengths, and what they bring out. It creates such a beyond multi-dimensional character. It’s a character that people know in ways that they never expected. I think that’s a beautiful gift that the MCU is able to have.

What Danny Ramirez’s Avengers: Doomsday Comments Mean For The MCU

Tackling a huge ensemble like the Avengers: Doomsday cast is easier said than done, as the team dynamic is one of the most crucial elements of the Avengers films. But as shown through their work on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Russo brothers are more than capable of pulling this off as filmmakers, which is why it wasn’t too much of a surprise when their return to the franchise came out in 2024. From Ramirez’s comments alone, it is clear that their specialty is definitely coming through with Avengers: Doomsday.

For major movies like Avengers: Doomsday, it’s also worth taking into account that the Russo brothers are also raising the bar for themselves after Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. As the Russos come back to the MCU timeline, they are now tackling not just Earth-616, but the whole multiverse, as they are tapping into however many realities and timelines that Avengers: Doomsday is exploring. That is one of the many reasons why it is incredibly exciting for two of the MCU’s best directors to be back for the end of The Multiverse Saga.

Robert Downey Jr. revealing himself to be Doctor Doom at SDCC

It’s clear from Ramirez’s Avengers: Doomsday comments that the Phase 6 installment will definitely be worth the wait, as the Russo brothers are handling one of the biggest stories ever told in the MCU. With the many characters already lined up for this film – and the ones that have yet to be announced as part of the final Avengers: Doomsday cast – it will be exciting to see how the directing duo brings these players together. Hopefully, following Ramirez’s explanation, the MCU audience will get a better idea of what is in store with Avengers: Doomsday sooner rather than later.

Captain America: Brave New World is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray.
