A New Harry Potter Movie With The Original Cast Just Took One Step Closer To Becoming A Reality

Anyone wanting to see a new Harry Potter movie based on the property that has never become a film just got some big news. J. K. Rowling wrote seven books in her series about the Boy Wizard and that became eight movies, with the last book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, split into two films. The series followed the students at Hogwarts school for witches and wizards and the kids battle to stop the evil Lord Voldemort.

While Rowling also created the stories for the prequel series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, she also developed another story that was never adapted into a movie. However, her story for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child found life in a very different form. This sequel story, taking place 19 years after the Harry Potter movies ended, became a stage play, written by Jack Thorne. Now, something special happened with that property that leaves hope it could one day come to theaters.

Tom Felton’s Harry Potter Return Makes The Prospect Of A Cursed Child Movie Very Intriguing

Tom Felton Joined The Cast Of The Broadway

Tom Felton has signed on to return to the Harry Potter franchise. This is huge news for fans of the series, as Felton returns to play an adult Draco Malfoy in the sequel stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. His return will come in the Broadway Harry Potter play, and he is the first of the movie’s child actors ever to return to play the role that made him famous.

Felton will appear first as Draco Malfoy on November 11, 2025, at the Lyric Theatre in New York City, and he will play the role for 19 weeks. This makes the idea of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child becoming its own movie intriguing for fans. The story takes place in the future where Draco and Harry’s sons are attending Hogwarts and end up getting involved in some dangerous situations, even accidentally changing the past and ruining what Harry accomplished.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child began its theater run in 2016.

Felton said that he is the same age as Draco in the story, and he is excited about getting started. “Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said. “Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me.” With that said, could this be the start of getting a Cursed Child movie off the ground? Unfortunately, that likely isn’t the case.

Will A Harry Potter & The Cursed Child Movie Ever Happen?

The Main Harry Potter Cast Members Aren’t Likely To Return

Scorpius and Albus in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

There is almost no chance that Harry Potter & The Cursed Child ever becomes a movie, at least not in how many fans want to see it. Most fans of the franchise would want to see Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint back as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. Having Tom Felton back as Draco Malfoy is a nice start, but without the three leading actors returning, it isn’t something that the studio would have faith in.

The problem is that none of the three lead stars are on good terms with J. K. Rowling. With the author promising to put all the money she makes from the franchise into programs that the actors are morally against, there is no chance they agree to star in a movie that would finance them. Rowling has also made comments that show she no longer respects them thanks to them standing by their beliefs, so she likely wouldn’t want them back either.

Don’t expect Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to get made with his former co-stars.

Of course, it could happen, but not for another decade. The HBO Max Harry Potter series has a new set of young actors playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and when that series ends, maybe those actors could take on the roles of the characters as adults. However, even with Tom Felton back, don’t expect Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to get made with his former co-stars stepping away from the franchise.
