Superman’s Reported Budget Makes It One Of The Most Expensive Movies Ever, Possibly Bigger Than Endgame

A new Superman movie report may have finally revealed the budget for the upcoming DC Universe blockbuster. With the summer season kicking off, James Gunn’s Superman movie is only a month away from opening in theaters, as the Man of Steel finally flies back into theaters. However, there is a lot riding on the Superman film for DC Studios – and the DC Universe itself – with a new report underlining how big the stakes may well be for Gunn’s movie.

The Hollywood Reporter recently stated that documents were filed by the Superman production team for the Ohio government – as they were seeking incentives on the film – that reported its budget at $363.8 million. Despite Gunn having addressed the Superman budget previously in February 2024 to not be in that number range, THR notes that “one longtime financier says the $363 million figure isn’t incorrect.” However, the report also states that DC has suggested the production budget is instead a net $225 million after tax and incentives breaks.

Per the trade, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery could potentially be spending “as much as $200 million” for the worldwide marketing tour, which is $50 million more than what is traditionally used for a mᴀssive summer blockbuster. Ultimately, between the budget for production and what is being spent for marketing, the report states that Superman is “certain to land in the $400 million club” for its total budget. This could potentially make Superman more expensive than Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame. At the time of this story’s publication, DC Studios has not commented on the Superman movie budget report.

What Superman’s Reported Budget Means

While time will tell if Gunn and DC Studios will have anything official to say on the Superman movie budget report, if these numbers are accurate, it also makes the David Corenswet-starring film the most expensive film in the Man of Steel’s cinematic history. With a supposed production budget of $363.8 million, the 2025 Superman movie would need to make at least $727.6 million. However, studios tend to want to see their movies make more than double the budget, which is bound to be the case for Superman, as well.

One of the advantages of Gunn being not just the DC Studios co-CEO, but also the filmmaker behind Superman, is that he has a positive track-record with superhero films. As all of his Guardians of the Galaxy movies emerged as box office successes – which has generated a solid audience for the director – the prospects of Superman‘s box office results do have potential. As the marketing for the DCU’s Superman has generated positive buzz, time will tell how this affects the film’s worldwide box office, with Gunn’s movie also coming out in the same month as The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Jurᴀssic World Rebirth.

Our Take On Superman’s Reported Budget

While Superman’s reported budget is definitely a lot to take into account, Gunn’s movie has a lot of potential, and could prove successful even with these higher budgets, especially as there has not been a big film for the Man of Tomorrow for quite some time. With the many DC characters in Superman that will also help expand the larger DCU, and the big marketing campaign that is behind this film, there is real potential for the release to prove a major commercial hit for DC Studios. Hopefully, after all the work that has been put into Superman, 2025 will mark a critical and profitable win for Krypton’s last son.
