“Is There Something?”: G.I. Joe’s Future Outside Of Transformers Crossover Gets Uncertain Update From Scarlett Actor After Snake Eyes’ $40M Disappointment

Samara Weaving, who played Scarlett in Robert Schwentke’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, talks about the franchise’s future outside the planned G.I. Joe and Transformers crossovers. Paramount confirmed plans to merge the two franchises in upcoming projects in 2024. The upcoming eighth installment in the Transformers franchise will feature a G.I. Joe crossover. A separate crossover movie was also confirmed to feature the return of Anthony Ramos as Noah Diaz. Meanwhile, G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant is rumored to be in development.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for Borderline, now available on home media and digital platforms as of June 10, Samara Weaving and Ray Nicholson discuss where G.I. Joe‘s future lies outside the Transformers crossovers. When asked about updates, Weaving revealed that she hadn’t heard anything. She also shared that she had a fun time playing Scarlett and would love to get a solo movie. Check out her comments below:

Samara Weaving: No. Is there something? I doubt it. I haven’t been listening to anything. [Laughs] I don’t know anything.

ScreenRant: There’s a crossover with Transformers coming!

Ray Nicholson: Whoa.

Weaving: Oh, I was in one of those — no, I wasn’t. Was it? Yes, I was —

Nicholson: G.I. Joe.

Weaving: No, but I was — no, that was a different one. I was in Monster Trucks. Okay, never mind. [Laughs]

ScreenRant: Similar vibes!

Weaving: I’ll be Scarlett, Scarlett was fun. Red wig, wearing a cool suit, coming down off a H๏τ helicopter. Hell yeah.

ScreenRant: Fighting like a badᴀss like you always do. I mean, what are we doing? Why don’t we have a solo movie for her already?

Weaving: Right? What are we doing? Okay, well, I’m by my phone if anyone wants to call. [Chuckles]

What This Means For G.I. Joe

Samara Weaving Isn’t Aware Of Future G.I. Joe Plans

It doesn’t sound like Weaving has heard much about potentially being involved in upcoming films in the G.I. Joe franchise since the 2021 movie. Snake Eyes is widely considered a weaker entry in comparison to the other two movies. The movie only grossed $40 million against an estimated $88 million budget, which was significantly below the break-even point, while the first movie, The Rise of Cobra, amᴀssed $302 million worldwide.

Critically, Snake Eyes didn’t do very well either. It had a 35% critical approval rate and a 74% audience approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes. Since then, the studios seemed to be interested in the direction of G.I. Joe and Transformers crossovers. However, Ever Vigilant isn’t officially confirmed. Weaving’s comments no doubt cast more uncertainty on the franchise’s future, as it sounds like she isn’t aware of any plans for future G.I. Joe projects.

Our Take On G.I. Joe’s Future

G.I. Joe And Transformers Will Have Crossovers In Several Movies

Even though Weaving’s comments cast some uncertainty on the franchise’s future, there are several plans in place. Transformers 8 is only one of the many confirmed upcoming movies to feature a G.I. Joe crossover. Though many details of the project are still unknown, the clash of the two franchises is expected to drive Transformers into a new narrative direction.

Transformers 9, the final installment in the Rise of the Beasts trilogy, is also in development, but whether it’ll further involve G.I. Joe is unclear. A separate live-action movie that centers around the crossover has been confirmed, with Chris Hemworth reportedly in talks to star. Information has been very scarce, but it does seem like there is a lot to expect from G.I. Joe in the future, especially if Transformers 8 does well at the box office.
