A new Superman movie trailer teased a major life change for the Man of Steel, but I don’t believe it would be a good decision for the DC Universe. I can’t wait to see David Corenswet in action in James Gunn’s Superman movie. One of the most important aspects of the character is his dual life, and I’m thrilled that Gunn has said many times that both the Superman and Clark Kent sides of the character will be spotlighted.
The best versions of the hero, such as Christopher Reeve and Tyler Hoechlin’s Supermen, managed to strike that balance that made Clark and Superman feel unique while being the same person. With every new trailer and bit of footage released from the upcoming DC movie, I love everything Corenswet is doing with that key aspect of playing the character. However, what I don’t want is to see those two sides merged in the first movie in the DCU’s slate of projects.
Superman’s New International Trailer Surprisingly Teased An Idenтιтy Reveal
The DCU Is Already Teasing A Status Quo Change For Superman
It took quite some time for us to get a first look at the new Superman movie. Thankfully, the past few months have seen marketing for the highly anticipated film ramp up, with multiple trailers and TV spots revealing more of Superman‘s cast in action and how the story of the film shapes up. There have been a few surprising reveals out of those trailers, but none shocked me more than a new tease in Superman‘s international trailer.
In the footage, Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane teases a future reveal for David Corenswet’s Superman. Lois says, “Eventually, people are gonna find out that you’re Superman.” Clark Kent plays it off, pointing out how his glᴀsses make everyone unaware that he is the Man of Steel. Based on how much is happening in Superman, I think it would be overkill to introduce an idenтιтy reveal storyline in the movie, and the tease would be better served in the future for another reason.
I’m Convinced It Is Way Too Early For The DCU’s Superman To Have His Secret Revealed
The Man Of Steel Needs A Few Years At The Top Of His Game
James Gunn’s DC Universe is just starting. As such, I can’t believe the director would already choose to have Superman dealing with the world knowing that he is Clark Kent right in his first movie. It is just too soon for that to happen. This is a story that makes sense for a Superman that the audience has spent years with, a hero that has been built up so he can get taken down before getting back on his feet.

That storyline has worked well before, with Superman & Lois‘ final season recently showing that it could be impactful if done right, as was the case for the story of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman. While Gunn has confirmed that David Corenswet’s Superman has been active in the DCU for three years, the audience will be seeing him for the first time this July. A proper idenтιтy reveal storyline would be an interesting prospect for the hero a decade in the future.
The MCU Showed DC The Perfect Way To Depict Superman’s Idenтιтy Reveal In The Future
Spider-Man Is The Template For The Teased Superman Movie Story
When it comes to idenтιтy reveals, many superhero movies have dabbled with those storylines. However, I would say that one of the best cases of that was when Mysterio revealed to the world that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was Spider-Man. That reveal completely turned his life upside down, leading to one of the biggest events in superhero movie history, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. I think the DCU could take some cues from the MCU for Superman’s idenтιтy reveal.
Based on the new Superman international trailer, I’m convinced that Gunn is planting the seeds for that story to play out in the future of the DCU, after Corenswet’s Superman has a few appearances under his belt. Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor being the one to reveal Superman’s secret idenтιтy to the world would be fitting and show how intense their rivalry is, completely changing the hero’s life. If done well, it could be one of the DCU’s most impactful storylines, just not in the upcoming Superman movie, as it would be too soon.
