The DC Universe’s Newest Wonder Woman Update Has Set Up Exactly How One Of The Franchise’s First Villains Can Return Already

The most recent update about the DC Universe‘s Wonder Woman movie has set up a way for one of the franchise’s first villains can come back. For a while since the announcement of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, focus has been placed on Superman. James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie has long been touted as the first true installment in the DC Universe’s overarching story, with other DC characters set to appear and flesh out the fledgling interconnected universe.

Naturally, where Superman is, many jump to the ᴀssumption that Batman and Wonder Woman are not far behind. As the other two members of DC’s core trinity, it is a common theory that upcoming DC movies will feature the Caped Crusader and the Princess of Themyscira. Where the latter is concerned, the DC TV show Paradise Lost was set to introduce Wonder Woman to the new universe, yet another future has now been unveiled that could see the return of one of the first villains in the entire DC Universe.

James Gunn Has Confirmed A DCU Wonder Woman Movie Is In The Works

Wonder Woman Was Never a Feminist Icon, She Was a Political Trojan Horse

Despite the thinking that Paradise Lost would introduce Wonder Woman to the DCU, this may have changed. Although Gunn has confirmed that Paradise Lost is still in development, albeit as a slow-moving production, he also confirmed a new Wonder Woman movie is in the works. Gunn was asked about this in an EW editorial for Superman, stating that a Wonder Woman movie is “being written right now.” This means that audiences may not have to wait much longer for Diana Prince’s DCU debut, sparking theories about what her own solo movie could look like.

The DCU Has Already Introduced A Perfect Wonder Woman Villain

While the movie itself remains shrouded in mystery, from its story and lead actor to who is even writing it, Wonder Woman‘s main villain may already have been introduced to the DCU. This came in Creature Commandos, the animated TV show that served as the first official DCU project, despite Superman being dubbed the first true installment regarding the franchise’s overarching story. In Creature Commandos, one of the supporting characters was Circe, a common Wonder Woman villain. Circe was one of the earliest antagonists of Diana Prince in the DC Comics universe.

Later iterations and reboots then pinned her as a central figure in Wonder Woman’s rogues gallery. In Creature Commandos, Circe is introduced as a renegade Amazonian sorceress who wishes to rule Themyscira using her army of followers, dubbed the Sons of Themyscira. However, Circe is revealed to be more heroic than usual when she unveils her plan to save the world from a vision she saw of the Justice League – a team that has not yet formed in the DCU – ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the hands of a tyrannical queen named Ilana Rostovic and her kingdom of Pokolistan.

The DCU’s Transmedia Casting Supports The Wonder Woman Movie Using Circe

The Franchise Has Set Up Circe’s Return In More Ways Than One

With Circe being such a common villain of Wonder Woman in the comics, it would seem almost a waste not to include her in the upcoming Wonder Woman film. Moreover, it would waste the transmedia casting format of the DCU, something which is already in full swing. Upon the announcement of the DC Universe, Gunn confirmed that actors cast in live-action roles would voice their characters in animation and vice versa. Frank Grillo is epitomizing this after voicing Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos and reprising his role in live-action in Superman and Peacemaker season 2.

In Creature Commandos, Circe was voiced by Anya Chalotra. Chalotra is a great pick for Circe, especially after her role as a sorceress in Netflix’s The Witcher. Bringing Chalotra back for a Wonder Woman movie would not only be an excellent way to reuse a compelling DC Universe character, but it would capitalize on the promises Gunn made for the franchise regarding its actors and their cross-media appearances, all while allowing Chalotra to flex her magic in live-action against the new DC Wonder Woman.
