Popular Wonder Woman Casting Choice Already Addressed Joining James Gunn’s DC Universe

Long before James Gunn officially announced the DCU’s first Wonder Woman movie, the top fan choice for Diana Prince had already addressed her potential casting in the franchise. James Gunn’s first announcement of the DCU’s Gods and Monsters projects included the confirmation of Superman and The Brave and the Bold, but it notably lacked a Wonder Woman solo project, which raised questions about DC Studios’ priorities for DC’s Trinity. The upcoming Paradise Lost series is set to explore Themyscira, but it likely won’t acknowledge Wonder Woman directly.

After Wonder Woman 3 was officially canceled, the odds of a Wonder Woman reboot in the DCU skyrocketed. Gal Gadot was no longer attached to the role, and the DCU was free to start Diana Prince’s DCU story from scratch with no ties to anything the DCEU had established. Of course, the biggest mystery around the DCU’s Wonder Woman reboot soon became which actor will portray the Amazonian warrior, and over a dozen actors have landed a spot among the most frequently fan-cast stars for the role.

James Gunn Recently Confirmed A New Wonder Woman Movie Is In The Works

On June 10th, 2025, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed a Wonder Woman is happening. Gunn provided Entertainment Weekly with an update on Paradise Lost, saying the series is “slow moving, but it’s moving.” Gunn also confirmed that DC Studios is “working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s being written right now.” The DCU’s first Wonder Woman movie still doesn’t have an official тιтle, release date, writer, or director, but it has finally joined Superman and Batman’s solo movies in the first chapter of the franchise after a significantly long wait.

Since the DCU’s upcoming Wonder Woman movie will likely be a complete reboot of the hero, DC Studios will eventually begin the search for a new Diana Prince actor. So far, Superman, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart are the only DC heroes commonly ᴀssociated with the Justice League to find their DCU actors. The Brave and the Bold‘s Batman hasn’t been cast yet, which suggests that the DCU’s official Wonder Woman casting announcement will take a while as well. In fact, there’s a chance that the DCU’s Wonder Woman actor will only be confirmed once Paradise Lost is released, in order to avoid taking attention away from the DCU series.

Scream Star Melissa Barrera Already Knows She’s A Strong Candidate For The DCU’s Wonder Woman

James Gunn hasn’t commented on any specific actor’s chances of playing Wonder Woman in the DCU, but several names have become popular choices among fans. Andor star Adria Arjona, Moon Knight‘s May Calamawy, Godzilla vs. Kong‘s Eiza González, and Shazam!‘s Grace Caroline Currey have all frequently appeared in fan-cast discussions. However, one of the most prominent fan favorites is Scream star Melissa Barrera, whose role as Sam Carpenter brought her widespread recognition. In an interview with A SH๏τ, Melissa Barrera acknowledged the fan-casting buzz and emphasized the importance of honoring Wonder Woman’s legacy when taking on such an iconic role:

“I had a friend that told me that. He’s on twitter. I haven’t been on twitter in a really long time, but he told me a year ago or something like that. I was like “oh interesting”. I think it’s nice because of what the character represents.”

“I think whoever gets the role, I just hope that they can embody the essence of the character because I think that those movies, whether they’re Marvel or DC, their reach is so big. And because those artists that get those roles will inevitably get a built-in fanbase and have the eyes and the ears of so many people, I think that it would be nice if they did something actually positive with the influence that they have to at least be a good example of the kind of human being that you wanna be in the world, instead of just using it for self-serving purposes.”

Based on her comments, Melissa Barrera hasn’t actively pursued the role of Wonder Woman, but she appears to fully grasp the character’s immense legacy in pop culture. Despite a relatively limited number of live-action appearances, Wonder Woman’s impact has been profound, as she represents far more than her status as the most famous female superhero in history: Diana Prince stands as a global symbol of strength, justice, and female empowerment. Whoever takes on the role in the DCU will need to embody those ideals both on and off the screen.

Why Melissa Barrera Would Make A Great Wonder Woman For The DCU

Melissa Barrera demonstrated her ability to portray strong and resilient characters in her recent horror movie run, which has consisted of Scream, Bed Rest, Scream VI, and Abigail. In the Scream franchise, Barrera’s performance as Sam Carpenter showcased the same screen presence and physicality that a live-action Wonder Woman needs. After Scream, Barrera’s Diana Prince could display the same leadership skills as Sam Carpenter while Barrera carries another major franchise alongside David Corenswet’s Superman and The Brave and the Bold’s Batman.
