Sydney Sweeney’s New Thriller Movie Tops Apple TV+ Charts Despite 50% Rotten Tomatoes Score

A new thriller movie, starring Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney, is now Apple TV+’s top movie. Sweeney earned her place as a household name after starring in HBO’s Euphoria as Cᴀssie Howard in 2019. She has since gone on to star in The White Lotus, the box office success Immaculate (2024), and Sony’s disappointing Madame Web (2024). Sweeney earned two Outstanding Supporting Actress nominations at the Emmy Awards and is poised to continue to rise in Hollywood in the coming years.

Moore, meanwhile, has been active in the industry since the ’80s, having starred in a variety of movies, including The Lost World: Jurᴀssic Park (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), Psycho (1998), Hannibal (2001), and Children of Men (2006). She even played a crucial role in the Hunger Games franchise, playing the villainous revolutionary President Coin. This is also not her first major Apple TV performance, given that she led the show Lisey’s Story for the platform. Having won the Best Actress Oscar for her work on Still Alice (2014), she is a major draw for Apple TV+’s latest hit.

Julianne Moore And Sydney Sweeney’s New Thriller Movie Topped The Charts

Apple TV+ Has Another Success On Its Hands

Sweeney and Moore’s latest release is a streaming-only thriller тιтled Echo Valley. Sweeney portrays Claire Garrett, a woman struggling to cope with a drug addiction, who returns home to her mother (Moore) after accidentally killing a man. The two are then forced to spend much of the rest of the movie attempting to cover Claire’s tracks and the various problems that sprout because of it. Echo Valley has earned mixed reviews, with ScreenRant‘s Mary Kᴀssel arguing that it “squanders its potential,” as “every character in Echo Valley is static.

Despite its disappointing 50% Tomatometer score and a 60% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes, Echo Valley has proved to be a sound investment for the streaming giant so far. According to Apple TV+, Echo Valley has earned a place as the platform’s #1 movie this week, coming ahead of Fountain of Youth, The Gorge, Wolfs, and Bono: Stories of Surrender. It has not completely topped Apple’s charts so far, as it remains behind the shows Sticks and Murderbot, but this is a great start for a movie that was available on streaming on June 13.

Our Take On Echo Valley’s Success

There Was Not Much Compeтιтion

It is not altogether surprising that Echo Valley earned a place at the top of the charts, given its limited compeтιтion. Fountain of Youth was released in May, The Gorge in February, Wolfs in September, and Bono: Stories of Surrender in May. Echo Valley is the most recent release, so it should be dominating as audiences flock to see the newest film on Apple TV. In addition, there is a rising interest in Sweeney movies, following the major success of Anyone But You. It also won’t be the last project from her, as she also has Americana and Eden scheduled for later this year.

Even with Echo Valley receiving mixed reception from critics and audiences alike, it seems that the biggest appeal was the star-studded cast and the mystery genre, which continues to be popular. Thus, the movie has overcome these challenges as its early charting is a good sign of its success.
