True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto and season 1 star Matthew McConaughey will reunite for a new mystery movie, 11 years later. The HBO anthology detective show premiered in 2014, maintaining impressive viewership and earning Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Drama Series and more. True Detective season 1 focuses on Louisiana State Police homicide investigators Rustin Cohle and Martin Hart (portrayed by McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, respectively), as a past murder case is re-examined. Pizzolatto also worked on True Detective seasons 2 and 3 but was not involved in Night Country.
According to Variety, Pizzolatto and McConaughey are now reuniting for an upcoming movie based on Mike Hammer. Skydance, which has the Mike Hammer rights, will be behind the mystery film, penned by Pizzolatto. Max Allen Collins, who contributed to Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer works, will executive produce and Jane Spillane will co-produce. Other producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Guymon Casady.
What This Means For The Mike Hammer Movie
Pizzolatto & McConaughey Are Familiar With Crime Stories
Considering the work of Pizzolatto and McConaughey, their reunion should excite audiences familiar with the True Detective season 1 story and/or Mike Hammer. Additionally, before creating the HBO detective series, Pizzolatto wrote the Magnificent Seven remake and thrillers Galveston and The Guilty. McConaughey, who won an Academy Award for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, has appeared in several well-regarded crime and mystery movies, including Lone Star and the upcoming The Rivals of Amziah King.
The character of Mike Hammer could be perfect for McConaughey, and it will be interesting to see what kind of story Pizzolatto creates for him. Introduced in the Mickey Spillane novel I, the Jury, Mike Hammer is a private investigator who takes on various murder cases, while trying to determine the whereabouts of his romantic interest, Velda, and more. There have been many books, along with movie and television adaptations, and prior to the newly announced Pizzolatto and McConaughey film, other Mike Hammer projects were based on I, the Jury and Kiss Me ᴅᴇᴀᴅly.
Our Take On The True Detective Reunion
Another Mystery From Pizzolatto & McConaughey Could Become A Hit
Not much else is known about the Mike Hammer project, but looking ahead, anticipation surrounding the film should only increase as more details and cast members are revealed. With Pizzolatto writing the screenplay and McConaughey likely starring in it, their True Detective reunion could be a major positive for the movie.
