New Superman Behind-The-Scenes Video Showcases The Kinder Side of David Corenswet’s Man Of Steel

A new Superman featurette showcases star David Corenswet interacting with young extras on set. Corenswet is joined in the cast by Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Sara Sampaio, Anthony Carrigan, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced, among others. Throughout the montage, the actor is seen lifting, high-fiving, complimenting, and playing with his child costars, channeling the hero’s softer side.

This video was shared by the Superman Instagram account:

Its caption reads: “A hero for ALL. 💙❤️ #Superman – only in theaters July 11.” In addition to the montage, the heartfelt clip also shows another look at a sH๏τ commonly featured in the movie’s marketing in which Superman protects a little girl from an exploding truck. The sequence is shown from a different angle, and the featured child actor describes working with Corenswet as “fun.”

What The “Hero For All” Promo Means For Superman

In stark contrast to the more brooding portrayals in Superman Returns and the DCEU, Superman’s Man of Steel was consciously made a softer, kinder version of the character, harkening back to his classic depictions. Director James Gunn revealed that he wanted to bring back a more empathetic iteration of the character because of the themes that the DC hero exemplifies.

He explained: “I think this is a movie about the values of being human, about kindness and love, and although those are some things some people… don’t like, most all of us really like do that stuff no matter what our other ideological beliefs are.” The filmmaker further sought to highlight Clark Kent’s Kansas farm boy roots, which inform his morality as a superhero.

Gunn also opened up about how Corenswet prioritized an altruistic, friendly depiction of Superman, specifically singling out the rationale behind his brightly colored suit. Per Gunn, “He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler, he dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that positivity.” The video furthers this idea of Superman being a hero to anyone in the world who needs him, especially children.

While the darker versions of Superman in films past certainly struck a chord with many fans, this lighthearted take on the hero is a more Christopher Reeve-style iteration that makes the character more approachable for families. Though Corenswet was out of character for most of the video, his jovial atтιтude towards the child actors seems to reflect his perspective on Clark and his motives. Superman may be returning Clark to his kind-natured roots, but Corenswet is bringing a fresh energy to the role.
