Thunderbolts* Box Office Doubles Its Budget After Just Barely Less Than A Month In Theaters

Thunderbolts*‘s box office run continues, and after almost a month in theaters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has achieved a goal that can help save its theatrical performance. Sadly, Thunderbolts* is currently the MCU’s third lowest-grossing movie, even though reviews and word of mouth have been positive on the film, putting it as one of the best MCU movies for many. Marvel has yet to confirm plans for a Thunderbolts* sequel, but if the movie manages to reach a certain mark, that could become more likely, especially given how Thunderbolts*‘s post-credits scene sets up a bigger MCU role for them.

According to the specialized box office tracker, Box Office Mojo, Thunderbolts*‘s box office sits at $369.5 million, with the MCU movie doubling its budget after just barely less than a month from its release. Thunderbolts*‘s reported budget is $180 million, which means the MCU movie is on the path to becoming profitable. When it comes to Hollywood releases, a film’s breakeven point is usually around 2x-2.5x its budget, which accounts for theaters’ share of the box office, marketing, and other expenses. As such, Thunderbolts*‘s box office would need to be somewhere in the $360-$450 million range to break even.

What Thunderbolts*’s Latest Box Office Update Means

The MCU Movie Is Fighting An Important Battle

According to Box Office Mojo, Thunderbolts*‘s latest weekend at the box office brought in roughly $5 million domestically. The MCU movie’s drops on weekends have been in the 41.8% to 56.4% range. Based on that, Thunderbolts* is not projected to make the high end of the range it would need to break even at the global box office. On Twitter, box office analyst Luiz Fernando believes that the MCU’s latest movie will end its theatrical run somewhere in the $380-$390 million range, which could be enough for it to break even.

While Thunderbolts* is not having the splashy box office run that Marvel Studios might have expected for a movie that carries the “New Avengers” тιтle, with the addition of digital sales and home video after the film ends its theatrical run, the studio should be able to turn a profit from Thunderbolts*. With compeтιтion at the box office from films like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Disney’s live-action Lilo & Sтιтch, Thunderbolts*‘s box office legs have simply faded, which will leave the MCU movie towards the bottom of the franchise in terms of theatrical gross.

Our Take On Thunderbolts*’s Latest Box Office Update

Marvel Studios Could Still Make A Franchise Out Of The Team

I never expected Thunderbolts* to be a box office hit. After all, the film focuses on an obscure comic book team with mostly supporting MCU characters. That said, even if Thunderbolts* ends its global run as one of the franchise’s lowest-grossing films, Marvel can still turn a profit through digital sales and home media.

Based on Thunderbolts*‘s positive reviews from fans and critics, I’m convinced that after the team plays a major role in at least Avengers: Doomsday, if not both upcoming Avengers movies, a sequel could do better in the future, changing Thunderbolts*‘s box office history.
