Tom Welling’s hit 2005 remake of a John Carpenter horror movie classic is now streaming for free. Carpenter’s own originals remain hugely popular, of course, and are widely available across all the streaming services. Carpenter himself no longer directs movies, his last one having been released in 2010, but he does continue composing scores, lending his unique brand of minimalist spookiness to other people’s films. He also continues enjoying the checks he receives from folks doing remakes of his movies, as the ever-cranky legend once famously quipped.
Those checks have indeed come at a steady pace over the years, as filmmakers continue revisiting Carpenter’s works in search of stories ripe for retelling. 2011’s remake of The Thing should have perhaps been a deterrent to further mining of the director’s filmography for exploitable IP, given its poor box office performance ($31 million worldwide on a budget of $38 million) and tepid critical reception (34% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). But more Carpenter remakes have come since, including an entire new Halloween trilogy, and several others are reportedly in the works.

2005’s The Fog is one Carpenter remake that succeeded at the box office, and it can currently be seen for free on streaming. The 1980 original concerned a small seaside town beset by a mysterious supernatural threat, and was a mᴀssive success, grossing $21 million on a reported budget of $1.1 million. Critics didn’t love Carpenter’s movie at the time, but it has since become a cult classic.
Directed by Rupert Wainwright and starring Smallville actor Welling, The Fog 2005, now available for free on streaming service Tubi, was itself a surprisingly big hit at the time of its release, grossing $46 million on a budget of $18 million.

The Fog starts with a classic horror premise. Like many a Stephen King story, it opens on a group of characters living their mundane lives in a seemingly dull coastal town. But dread soon creeps in, and it quickly becomes evident that something is very badly amiss, at which point the story takes a turn into survival horror.
There’s a mystery element to The Fog too, as its characters uncover the dark secret behind the founding of the town, and realize that the ghosts hiding in the fog are after revenge. Given it was released in 2005, a fairly unsubtle era in horror, it’s not surprising that the remake takes a different approach than the original, eschewing Carpenter’s famed slow-burn storytelling in favor of jump scares and gore.
