Chris Hemsworth Teased Thor’s Death 3 Years Ago & I’m Even More Sure He Dies In Avengers: Doomsday After His New MCU Comments

Chris Hemsworth commented on Thor‘s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe three years ago, and after the actor shared a new statement recently, I’m convinced that the God of Thunder will die in Avengers: Doomsday. Thor is one of the MCU’s original Avengers, which makes him very special for the franchise at a time when only half of the team is still active in the MCU. Adding to that, Thor also holds an impressive MCU record, being the hero with the most number of solo movies — 4 — though Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will tie him in 2026.

That said, Thor has something going for him that Spider-Man does not, and that is the fact that Hemsworth’s Marvel hero is confirmed for the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. Not only that, but Hemsworth was the first name revealed by Marvel for the film, which I believe is a tease that Thor will play a major role in the upcoming MCU movie. Thor: Love and Thunder put the hero’s story in a place where there are few paths left to be explored, and with Hemsworth’s Marvel comments, I’m convinced Thor will be Avengers: Doomsday‘s major death for a few reasons.

Chris Hemsworth Sounded Ready For Thor To Die 3 Years Ago

Thor’s Latest MCU Movie Was Not As Exciting As Expected

Before going over how Hemsworth recently made it sound like Thor’s time in the MCU could be coming to an end soon, it is important to note how that idea is not something that has only come to the actor recently. In 2022, during an interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth addressed what he felt would happen if he were to come back as Thor. According to the MCU star, a new appearance as Thor would “probably be the finale” of his arc in the MCU. While that does not mean Thor would have to die, another comment teased that.

During the same interview, the actor described howYou have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero.” After describing a common template for stories, Hemsworth pondered whether Thor fit the last stage of that statement, saying, “Am I at that stage?” In the three years since his thought-provoking Thor comments, the actor has yet to appear again as the hero in live-action. As such, Avengers: Doomsday will mark the first time Hemsworth has played Thor since his last solo film, and based on his comments, it seems like Thor could die.

The MCU Star Has Shared Worrying Thor Comments Ahead Of Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Hemsworth Seems To Be On An MCU Farewell Tour

Strengthening the theories based on Chris Hemsworth’s 3-year-old Thor comments are the actor’s recent words on the hero’s MCU journey. As Avengers: Doomsday filming rages on, Hemsworth shared a Thor video and comments about his time in the MCU on YouTube. Hemsworth described playing Thor as one of the greatest honors of his life and thanked the fans for making his last 15 years in the MCU so special, with a journey the Marvel star describes as “unforgettable.” While Hemsworth ended the message with a tease of what is next, saying, “Next up, Doomsday!” the statement felt like a goodbye.

After Thor: Love and Thunder proved itself divisive, I was curious to see what could be on the way for the hero. Interestingly, Hemsworth seemed game to continue in the MCU for a few more years, with the actor commenting on how the fans deserved a Thor 5 that lived up to expectations. However, based on his 3-year-old MCU comments and now the new video and statement the actor shared, I can’t see how Marvel could do anything but kill Thor in Avengers: Doomsday. I feel like Hemsworth let that decision take form over the past few years.

I’m Convinced Thor Dying In Avengers: Doomsday Makes A Lot Of Sense

Thor’s MCU Journey Ending With Death Would Be Poetic After All He Has Been Through

Besides the connection to Hemsworth’s old Thor finale comments and the goodbye tone of his new words and video, I believe that, story-wise, it would make sense for the God of Thunder to die in Avengers: Doomsday. Every single Avengers movie in the MCU has seen at least one major death. Coulson was it in The Avengers; Quicksilver bit the bullet(s) in Avengers: Age of Ultron; many died in Avengers: Infinity War; and Iron Man and Black Widow sacrificed themselves to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Thor dying in Avengers: Doomsday would fit in with the franchise’s history.

While there are some notable absences from the announced Avengers: Doomsday cast, there is an actor that closely connects to Hemsworth’s MCU legacy, and that is Tom Hiddleston. Marvel Studios is likely reuniting Thor and Loki in the MCU for the first time in years in Avengers: Doomsday. After Disney+’s Loki season 2, Hiddleston’s character has become the protector of the multiverse. Due to that, if Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom wants to take full control of the multiverse in Avengers: Doomsday, then that likely means he will have to steal Loki’s powers or get past him.

Thor has gone through pretty much all he could, and saving his brother to die and go to Valhalla, reuniting with Jane Foster, would be a fitting ending.

I used to think that meant Loki was at serious risk of dying in Avengers: Doomsday, but now I’m convinced that Thor could sacrifice himself to save his brother after Chris Hemsworth’s comments. Thor: Love and Thunder saw the hero find meaning in his life again. At the end of the movie, he took in the young Love, Gorr the God Butcher’s daughter, and was in a great place in his life. Thor has gone through pretty much all he could, and saving his brother to die and go to Valhalla, reuniting with Jane Foster, would be a fitting ending.

Avengers: Secret Wars’ Rumored MCU Reboot Makes Thor’s Death More Likely

The Marvel Studios Franchise Might Go Through Some Major Changes

Thor’s death becomes even more likely to me when stopping to think about the future of the MCU. For some time now, there have been rumors that Avengers: Secret Wars will soft reboot the MCU. That tracks, as the comic book event that inspired the film did the same. Adding to it, Marvel is introducing Franklin Richards, a key character in the multiverse reboot, this year through The Fantastic Four: First Steps. An MCU soft reboot would be the perfect way to bring back beloved heroes like Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America.

Marvel has an X-Men movie in development to be released after the Multiverse Saga ends. The MCU’s next saga could unite the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the original Avengers, and many other Marvel teams for the first time. If that is where the franchise is going, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor dying in Avengers: Doomsday would make even more sense. Thor‘s death could be crucial to setting up the Multiverse Saga’s finale, and when the franchise is rebooted, a new actor could come in to take over the role from Chris Hemsworth, which would make his new goodbye-like statement fitting.

The Thor franchise is a key component of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), focusing on the Asgardian god of thunder, Thor Odinson. The series explores Thor’s journey from a headstrong prince to a wise and powerful hero who plays a central role in the Avengers and the broader MCU narrative. The franchise is known for its blend of epic fantasy, Norse mythology, and humor, particularly in the later films directed by Taika Waiтιтi.
