During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter for his new Paramount+ series MobLand, Pierce Brosnan hinted that Mamma Mia 3 may reveal Sophie’s biological father. The actor, who plays one of Sophie’s possible fathers in Sam Carmichael, says that he knows who her real father is, and that the third movie may finally reveal the answer to audiences. Is Pierce Brosnan’s Sam The Real Father?
With Pierce Brosnan admitting that he knows who Sophie’s biological father is, it seems likely that it’s his own character, Sam Carmichael. It’s long been theorized that Sam is Sophie’s real dad in Mamma Mia!. Based on the song “Our Last Summer,” each man shares a talent with Sophie, but only one, Sam’s drawing, isn’t shared by Donna. Since Donna is also adventurous and musical, the unique artistic trait points to Sam. Additionally, Donna spent the most time with Sam, meaning that, statistically, he is most likely the father.
Perhaps an even bigger question than Sophie’s biological father is whether Mamma Mia 3 will actually happen. In June 2020, producer Judy Craymer revealed that a third movie is in the works. The next update didn’t come until May 2023, when ABBA member Benny Andersson voiced doubts about another sequel, calling the idea “wishful thinking” and stating that he wouldn’t support another film unless significant changes were made. Despite this, in October 2023, Craymer once again confirmed plans for a third installment.

However, much of this speculation ignores the fact that the musical’s heart lies in Sophie realizing that family isn’t defined by biology, as all three potential fathers offer her love.
