With rumors floating around who will be the villain in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, one Marvel game actor addresses if they’d be down to play the Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart of their character. As Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day film will be starting production this year, there are still many details that have yet to be answered about the Phase 6 installment. One of the big mysteries for the movie is who Peter Parker will be facing next from the larger Marvel canon.
In a new interview with Spider-Man News, Stephen Oyoung, who voiced Martin Li, a.k.a. Mister Negative, in Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man video game, and reprised the role in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, was asked about the rumors that the Marvel foe will be the big bad in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and whether or not he would be open to portraying the character in live-action in Tom Holland’s upcoming sequel. Oyoung shared the following when addressing whether he had been given the opportunity to audition for the character:
It’s very humbling because I’ve tried for many years to work in this business, get a name for myself. It’s been an extremely challenging journey, and so to have this awareness in the fan base, which by the way, the fans, they don’t just like anything – to have this burgeoning recognition is everything I’ve hoped and worked for. Now whether I get the actual role or not, that’s up to higher powers than me. I’m just glad people like my work and are entertained. As for audition opportunities, I can’t rightly say one way or the other. But I will say. On the business side of things, studios want big names, global names. So take that for what you will.
Oyoung also elaborated on what he would want to do differently if he got the chance to play Mister Negative in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, to allow the character to be different from the iteration that he portrayed in the video games:
I’d like to ramp up the physicality if I could. And also play up more of the street level triad leader angle. Would be nice to see some gritty gang war drama play out. But of course, that’s a writer thing!
Spider-Man News also asked if Avengers: Secret Wars was another project he would love to play Mister Negative in, with the actor sharing the following on whether he would want that, and if so, which MCU character he would want to interact with in the Phase 6 finale:
Who’s going to say no to that? Yes, I’d love the chance. It’d be a real full circle moment for me and my career. But again, I think the chances of that are quite slim. But as for the character himself, I’d love to see Mr. Negative interact with Kingpin. Two New York crime bosses having a climactic showdown. The possibilities are endless.
What Stephen Oyoung’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day Comments Mean
At the time of this story’s publication, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have not announced who will be the main Spider-Man: Brand New Day villain or addressed whether or not Mister Negative is in the story. However, Oyoung wouldn’t be the first actor who voices a character through animation or video games and then gets to play their character in another medium, were he to be cast. But as Oyoung stated, it may also come down to the studios wanting a more recognizable name for Mister Negative, if he is indeed meant to debut in the MCU timeline in 2026.
In terms of factoring Mister Negative into the Spider-Man: Brand New Day story, it wouldn’t be too shocking if Martin is someone that the upcoming movie may be considering for Holland’s sequel. While it remains to be seen if the MCU movie will follow anything related to the comic of the same name, Mister Negative did play a crucial role in Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Even though the MCU’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is more than likely going use many original elements and storylines, that doesn’t mean a villain like Mister Negative couldn’t be part of the story.
Our Take On Stephen Oyoung’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day Comments
Anyone who has played Insomniac’s Spider-Man video games is well aware of how incredible Oyoung was as Mister Negative, which is why it would be incredible if he were to get to play the villain live-action. Martin would be a different antagonist for Peter compared to the ones he faced in Holland’s first Spider-Man trilogy in both his powers and story, and this could be a solid way to give Brand New Day a refreshing approach. But for now, the world will have to wait and see who will actually end up being the antagonist of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
