Pierce Brosnan & Helen Mirren’s New Crime Comedy Continues A Genre Revival I’m Loving

Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren are both icons in their own right. Dame Mirren has been working in the industry for over half a century, and even at nearly 80 years old, she is not slowing down. Some of her recent roles have been her most notable, including her Oscar-winning performance in The Queen and her role in the Yellowstone spinoff series 1923. While she is capable of performing intense drama, Mirren also has range, giving more lighthearted performances, such as playing the narrator in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

Brosnan is also venerated and elastic in his own right, playing everything from James Bond to one of the potential dads in the Mamma Mia! movies. The actor is also having a big year already, performing in the well-reviewed spy drama Black Bag and providing his voice-acting skills to the surprise box office animated hit The King of Kings. He has also already acted alongside Mirren in the Paramount+ crime drama series MobLand. Now, Mirren and Brosnan are reuniting together for a new film, and it looks to be part of an exciting genre revival.

The First Trailer For Pierce Brosnan & Helen Mirren’s The Thursday Murder Club Is Now Out

The Movie Is Set For Release On August 28

The first trailer for The Thursday Murder Club has now been revealed. The upcoming whodunit movie is based on the bestselling book by Richard Osman. It chronicles the story of four retirees who spend their free time solving cold-case murders, but see things take a turn when they are faced with a real-life murder mystery. The movie is directed by Harry Potter creative Chris Columbus and features Mirren, Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Jonathan Pryce, and Tom Ellis. It is set for release on August 28 on Netflix.

The Thursday Murder Club is not the only murder mystery film to come out in recent times.

Now, Netflix has revealed the official teaser trailer for The Thursday Murder Club. The trailer starts with the elderly quartet benignly discussing a cold case from May 11, 1973, while reenactments play out, as part of their Thursday ritual. Things take a turn when an actual murder takes place in their retirement village. Even amidst this death, the trailer maintains a light tone, including a moment where one character seemingly celebrates the opportunity to solve this real-life mystery, before following this up with “obviously RIP and all that.”

The Murder Mystery Genre Has Come Back In A Major Way Recently

It Recalls A Bygone Era

The Thursday Murder Club is not the only murder mystery film to come out in recent times. The genre has seemingly had somewhat of a renaissance in recent years. Murder mysteries have been historically popular in the media through TV shows like Murder She Wrote, and filmed mystery novel adaptations of And Then There Were None and other Agatha Christie books. The genre’s roots can even be traced back to the pre-cinema era when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories were released as serials in magazines.

The last few years have seen a huge boom in films in this category. This has included the Knives Out films, the second of which was also produced by Netflix. These films are connected by the appearance of leading detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Kenneth Branagh has also played recurring sleuth Hercule Poirot in several movies, including Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Even comedic actor Adam Sandler has made his pᴀss at the genre, with Netflix’s Murder Mystery. This means that this once-outdated genre is officially on the rise, and it has come back in a major way.

The Thursday Murder Club Looks Like Another Really Fun Murder Mystery Movie Amid A Genre Revival

It Has A Great Ensemble Cast

The Thursday Murder Club looks to be the next entry in this growing murder mystery boom. Akin to works like Knives Out, the trailer makes this movie out to be incredibly fun, featuring humor even against the backdrop of murder. The movie has also found a fun ensemble cast within the main quartet of retirees, all of whom boast impressive acting backgrounds. All of these factors make The Thursday Murder Club one to watch out for as it perpetuates the mystery genre trend later this summer.
